Strippers Threaten Cover Up Strike
Over Low Pay for Art of Taking 'Em Off
Hollywood (U.E) Nine
fhapely burlesque strippers,
seeking more take-home-pay for
their takeoff art, threatened a
"cover-up" strike today with an
ultimatum of: A raise in pay
or no more lowering of dresses.
This resolution among -the
pantie-and-G-string set was pass
ed Monday at the first official
meeting of the League of Exotic
Dancers. The historic moment
occurred in a hot room above a
downtown Los Angeles saloon.
Girls Band Together
The girls, headed by President
Jennie (The Bazoom Girl) Lee
(42-30-36). banded together with
their clothes on to do something
"about the low wage scale of
$85 a week" they get when they
take them off.
"In New York they get $125,"
declared President Lee, fluffing
her long blonde hair.
"But here some clubs put a
costume on a cocktail waitress
and say go! Waitresses ' don't
know how to dance. They aren't
strip-teasers, they're exhibition
ists. We think stripping is an art
and we must protect it."

Oregon GOP Sees Ice Harbor Dam
Approval as Chance To Beat Morse

the nine girls and one French
poodle named Tina settled down
to business.
"The meeting will come to
order," announced Jennie, who
was wearing a brown cotton
halter dess, a yellow pencil and
a black notebook.
100 Strippers Wanted
"We have a telegram from
Caprice and Misty: 'Sorry can't
be at the meeting. We're rehear
sing without pay. Good luck."
"Now I think we- should get
the 100 strippers in this area
to sign a petition for higher pay
and send it to our Union, AGVA,
Jennie continued "briskly. "They
don't pay enough attention to
our problems.
"Many of us get above scale,
but those' who don't need higher
pay. We'll ask for a $10 a week
raise, but settle for $5," she con
cluded brightly.

Washington (Special) Oregon
Republicans are happiest over
approval of funds to start con
struction of Ice Harbor dam be
cause they think it will aid them
next year in ther drive to defeat
Sen. Wayne Morse wnen ne
comes up for reelection.
Morse and the other three
Democratic senators from the Pa
cific Northwest were responsible
for obtaining the $1,000,000 ap
propriation by which tnat lower
Snake River project will be
launched this fiscal year.
As the Oregon GOP sees it,
however, they can turn this reg
ional accomplishment against
Morse in his home state because
they can argue to his constitu
ents that this dam in Washing
ton state will be damaging to an
important Oregon resource, Co
lumbia River salmon.
Howl of Protest
As soon as approval of the
funds for Ice Harbor was an
nounced last week, fishing in
terests set off a howl of protest
to the public and to Morse and
Sen. Richard L. Neuberger and
dispatched a representative to
Washington, D.C., to stir up op
position. '
Neuberger, who intends to
campaign for Morse next year
' and who is sensitive to any con
servation group protests, shot
back that "so-called fishing
groups" in this case were out
"to shape political destinies far
more than want to save salmon?"
The Oregon state director of
the Izaak Walton League, Dan
P. Allen of Portland, was among
those to rap the senators for
pushing the Ice Harbor project.
Although a frequent defender of
Izaak Walton League proposals
and positions, Neuberger de
clared: "By what mysterious alchemy
does the state president of the
Oregon Izaak Walton League de
cide - that Neuberger deserves
censure for support of Ice Harbor
but that "Interior Secretary
Douglas) McKay and (Gov. Paul)
Patterson shall go unscathed for
support of far higher dams on
the Salmon and Clearwater riv
ers? It is perhaps an alchemy
which' has much to do with the
fact that the Ice Harbor dam is
to be a federal dam whereas a
great, private-power combine has
plans to acquire the power sites
on the Clearwater?"
Silent About John Day
Neuberger pointed out that
"many of the fisheries groups
assailing Ice Harbor dam are
silent about John Day dam on
the Columbia , "which will be of
about equal height.
"Both Ice Harbor and John
Day will stand between the sal
mon coming in from the ocean
and the mountain spawning
grounds in Idaho," the senator
contended. "How do these fish
eries . groups decide that they
must object to Ice Harbor and
yet acquiesce to John Day? Is it
because Ice Harbor is to be a
federal dam, whereas Pacific
Power and Light and other pri
vate utilities have a scheme for
securing ownership and control
of all the energy generated at
John Day?" '
Morse Says Little
'. Morse for his part has said
little about the Ice Harbor vs.
rfisheries groups controversy, but
he did indicate what may be
come one of his weapons in run
ning for reelection.
Senate last week:
I am engaged in investigat-
- o
mg some of the contraciurai
activities of the Department of
the Interior under , the present
secretary of the Interior, and I
have gone far enough in my in
quiry to satisfy me that so many
of the secretary's policies have
been against the public interest
that I do not propose to have him
granted any additional power, at
least until after the investiga
tion is completed."
Morse made the statement by
way of explanation for blocking
a minor bill that would have
given McKay authority to make
50-year leases of land owned by
the Alaska Railroad. It would
also give McKay power to lease
He told the the entire railroad to private
operators if he wished.
