THE ARTHRITIS BUSINESS
First off, I must say that any
one who imagines "arthritis" is
some sort of specific malady
which requires some sort of rem
edy or treatment that "ordinary"
doctors are not qualified to give,
is a gullible geek and his name is
legion. He makes very good pick
ing for those who convert medi
cine to business. These operators
find it very easy and very lucra
tive to sell the gullible geek with
Larger Potato Crop
Seen for West Stales
Portland (U.R) This year's
late summer potato crop in five
Western states . is expected to
show an eight per cent increase
over last year's crop, according
to the U. S. Department of Agri
culture marketing news service.
Oregon, Idaho, Washington,
California and Colorado are ex
pected to produce a combined
yield of 25,875,000 bushels of po
tatoes, compared to last year's
crop of 24,926,000 bushels. Ore
gon's late summer crop was fore
cast at 4,030,000 bushels, slight
ly above last year's production.
The fall crop of potatoes is es
timated to be 18 per cent more
than last year. Oregon's predict
ed fall crop, 9,960,000, would be
620,000 bushels over production
last fall.
The marketing service said
onion production in the five
western states would be about
nine per cent below average.
Cold weather in Oregon and
Washington contributed to the
decline.
Eisenhower Nominates
Panama Ambassador
Washington (U.R) Presi
dent Eisenhower has nomin
ated Julian F. Harrington, Fram
ingham, Mass., to be ambassador
to Panama. '
Harrington, a Foreign Service
career officers, succeeds Seldon
Chapin, who has been trans
ferred to Iran.
Other nominations included:
Franklin P. R. Rittenhouse,
Las Vegas, to be U.S. Attorney
for the District of Nevada for
a four-year term.
Arthur C. Carmichel, San
Jose, Calif., to be superintend
ent of the U.S. Mint at San
Francisco.
"arthritis" several "shots" of
each new miracle medicine as it
comes on the market, giving
what the "science writers" call
great promise. The beauty of the
arthritis business is that by the
time the wonder .drug has proved
worthless or dangerous, the cus
tomer has forgotten the "great
promise" and awaits the nex
wonder drug every new drug
is a wonder drug these days. The
wonder is that the gullible geek
never grows skeptical of the
"science writer" method of ex
ploitation. .
It is hard to persuade people
who have learned how to spell
and pronounce "arthritis" that
their joint disability is not in
flammation at all (arlkr- means
joint; itis means 'inflammation)
but just the rheumatiz. Victims
of the snide diagnosis' are so
awed by pretensions that they

dare not ask' what ails them. If
a customer summons sufficient
courage to ask for an explanation
the big noise has only to snap:
"It's arthritis as I have al
ready told you." That puts the
half-informed or uninformed
customer at a disadvantage
Instead of lapsing into embar
rassed silence the customer
should follow with a left cross:
"Yes, I heard you, Doctor. Arth
ritis is the label you applied to
my joint disability, but won't
you tell me something about the
nature or cause of arthritis or
don't you know any more about
it than I do?"
That may offend, the charla
tan's dignity if so, count your
self lucky to be shut of him.
I keep trying to tell you poor
souls that in most instances (at
least 95 per cent, I should say)
joint disability at all not ar
thritis" but physical degenera
tion. I propose that we call phy
sical degeneration of joint or
joints rheumatiz.
That's what I call it, in the
pamphlet Calcium k Rheumatic.
For a copy of the pamphlet send
me a stamped, self-addressed en
velope. If you change the title
of the pamphlet when you ask
for it you will receive no reply.
In another piece Til tell you
what every doctor knows or
should know about the nature or
cause of rheumatiz.
