TEMPERANCE AND
CRAPULENCE
Adults who smoke temperate
ly or moderately seldom if ever
suffer serious ill effects, except
that victims of such effects or
excessive or crapulent smoking
as angina pectoris, angiitis ob
literans (Buerger's . disease), or
duodenal' ulcer complex seem
to have a relapse soon after
they resume smoking even, just
occasionally.
No, of course I don't pretend
to know that excessive smoking
causes any of the maladies men
tioned. I merely accept the pre
vailing opinion of medical au
thorities.. At present a question of para
mount interest is whether smok
ing causes or contributes to de
velopment of cancer of the lungs,
bronchi or larynx (voice box).
. In my opinion it is doubtful
whether smoking causes or con
tributes to development of can
cer. I think my opinion .weighs
as much as the opinion of any
other doctor in regard to the
relation of smoking to cancer,
since no one knows the cause
of cancer.
The most convincing evidence
I have seen is the immediate
recurrence of symptoms in cases
of angina, Buerger's disease
or'duodenal ulcer complex when
patients who have obtained great
relief by quitting resume smok
ing even just occasionally. Many
physicians have' observed the
same thing. . .
The "duodenal ulcer complex"
I. just mentioned is a group of
symptoms which suggest peptic
or duodenal ulcer all the usual
symptoms of ulcer except posi
tive X-ray findings. ' . 1
According to some physicians
with great experience some vic
tims of thrombo-angiitis obliter
ans (Buerger's ' disease) have
never smoked at all. This doesn't
prove that crapulent or excessive
smoking is not the most import
ant causative factor, nor does it
prove the person who has the
disease or one who is training
Gen. Taylor Urges
Strong Ground Forces
Quantica Marine Base, Va.
(U.R)-Gen. Maxwell D. Taylor,
new Army Chief of Staff, said
Saturday the way to avoid a
"disastrous big war" is to main
tain ground forces strong enough
"to deter or to win the small
wars." v .
'Making the first major pres
entation of his strategic -views
before the annual conference of
defense leaders here, he pic
tured a modern, mobile army
as the kind , of military force
that can check Communist ag
gression without plunging the
world ' into all-out atomic and
hydrogen warfare. .
While he did not directly
criticize Administration cuts in
Army manpower, Taylor ' indi
cated he does not subscribe to
the thesis that this country
should place primary defense re
liance on a capacity for "mas
sive retaliation" with air power
and atomic weapons.

How to recognize a cranulent
smoker: He or she smokes, (1)
before eating: (2) in the course
of a meal; (3) while pretending
to , be at work or play; (4) re
gardless of proximity to nersons
who do not like to breathe riol-
luted air; (5) with gross careless
ness about disposal of ashes and
butts; (6) because, in the
it seems nonchalant, or, when
uiere's little character left, (7)
in a childish endeavor to cover
consciousness of inferiority.
About 20 per cent of medical
students did not smoke and 10
per cent did not drink in mv
day. I began smoking only after
i nad practiced medicine four
or five years. For ten years I
smoked crapulously. Then I dis
covered that I could do better
work and more of it if I refrain
ed until the stint nr tho Hav'c
work was' done. I found that I
derived a good deal more en
joyment from smoking temper
ately than from smoking exces
sively. So I can say from ex
perience and not from prejudice
that temperance in smoking in
volves less risk to health and
gives more pleasure than crapu
lence. QUESTIONS ANO ANSWERS . -Minor

July 30 Adjournment Of Congress Doubled
Washington (U.R) Congress
enters the legislative home
stretch this week with much
doubt' that it will meet its July
30 adjournment date. Some lead
ers say Aug. 15 is the more
likely target.
When the House convenes
Monday it was to have before it
two controversial measures
liberalization of social security
benefits and raising of the na
tional minimum wage from the
present 75 cents an hour to 90
cents or $1.
Among other measures be
hind the House legislative dam
are President Eisenhower's fed
eral highway building program,
atomic merchant ships, free Salk
polio vaccine, public .housing,
federal aid to schools, changes
in the refugee admission law,
and exemption of natural gas
