Disneyland Park To Be Unveiled Today
In History's Biggest Television Show
Hollywood (U.R) The big
gest one-network television show
in history featuring everything
from Davy Crockett to 500
homing pigeons today will un
veil Walt Disney's $17,000,000
amusement park, Disneyland.
Twenty-four cameras, a be
hind camera staff of 63 and "the
most complicated technical set
up in the TV industry" will be
used for the long-awaited pro
gram over ABC-TV from 3:30 to
5 p.m. (PST) (Editor's note: The
program will be carried by sta
tion KBES-TV.)
The program will combine a
dedication of the 160-acre park
with a press preview for report
ers and columnists from all over
the nation, plus press represent
atives from 30 foreign countries.
30.000 Cuttts Expected
Besides newsmen and friends
invited by ABC-TV and Disney
park also issued Invitations for a
Studio, the concessionaires in the
grand total of 30,000 guests and
assorted freeloaders.
The TV program, "Dateline
Disneyland," has been under re
hearsal since May 21. ABC offi
cials insisted "It's the largest in
terms of cameras, personnel and
scope ever covered by a single
network and our problems have
been staggering."
The show will begin with Walt
Disney arriving as engineer on
the Disneyland railroad that
runs three miles around the
park. California Gov. Goodwin
J. Knight and Fred Gurley, pres
ident of Santa Fe Railroad, will
be "starred" with him. After a
dedication by three chaplains,
the San Diego Marine band will
play while 80 jet planes roar
overhead.
To Ride Down Street
Disney then will ride in a 1901
automobile down the old-fashioned
main street, lined with
real stores and restaurants, that
is the entrance to the park.
Each of the four sections of
the park will contribute its own
"spectacular" show. Fess Bark
er, as- Davy Crockett, Irene
Dunne and a 160-foot paddle
wheel steamboat will be stars
of the "Frontierland" section.
At "Tomorrowland" viewers will
see a synthetic rocket trip to
the moon. Those 500 pigeons will
flutter out of a clock as "a salute
to peace." Forty-eight Boy Scouts
also will raise flags of the 48
states.
Boat Ride Offered
Next viewers will be treated to
a look at "Adventureland,"
where customers can take a boat
ride past make believe wild
animals. The final super-colossal
event will be the lowering of the
drawbridge into the castle in
"Fantasyland." Three -.hundred
children will rush across the
drawbridge to try out the amuse
ment rides in the shape of
Dumbo elephants, Peter Pan
characters and other figures
from Disney's famed cartoons.
"If this doesn't beat Ed Sulli
van (on CBS) I don't know what
will," an ABC spokesman said.
The opeing of the park is the
climax to Disney's 30-year car
eer of entertaining both adults
and children. Construction be
gan one year ago today.
The park opens to the public
Monday. The capacity will be
held to 40,000 in the park at any
one time.
Holly Leaf Miner
Found in Portland
Salem (U.PJ The holly leaf
miner was found last week in a
three-acre holly orchard on
Northwest 53rd drive in Port
land's West Hills, the State De
partment of Argiculture said.
F. P. Larson, plant survey en
tomologist, said the infested or
chard ' is a young planting, not
yet in bearing. This is the first
time the leaf-miner found in
Oregon about seven weeks ago
in southeast Portland has ap
peared in a commercial planting
of any age1.
The infestations in this or
chard are light. One of the larg
est holly growing sections . in
Oregon is located within a few
miles of the young planting.
Larson said the department is
seeking information on sources
of parasites which may be
brought into Oregon for release
in holly orchards. He said Can
ada has been using parasites on
h611y leaf miner for several
years, apparently with some suc
cess at point of liberation. So
far he has not been able to con
tact a supply of these parasites.
