nings Thompson, Phoenix, were wed in ceremonies at the United
Presbyterian church, Albany, Sunday, July 10.

Meet for Party
A lawn and swimming party
late Wednesday afternoon and
evening at the home of Dr. and
Mrs. Edwin R. Durno, 222 Valley
View drive, was attended by
members of the Jackson County
Medical society, their wives, and
other guests. Honored at the
party was Dr. William W. P.
Holt, longtime practicing physi
cian and surgeon of the county.
Another guest at the party was
Dr. Charles Sweeney, former
practicing physician also in this
county, who now lives in the
Lithia hotel at Ashland.
From Grants Pass were Dr.
Ray Johnson, president of the
Josephine County Medical soci
ety, and Mrs. Johnson.
A barbecue buffet supper was
served and John Lusk and his
orchestra provided music for
dancing in the patio.
Dr. Holt used as his subject,
"Horse and Buggy Medicine,"
and told of practice in the county
before automobiles, telephones
and electric lights became com
mon conveniences. t.
Dr. Holt is the oldest living
member of the society and came
to this county in 1906. He was
born in China of missionary par
ents and he received his medi
cal training in Oregon, graduat
ing in 1905.
He lived in Eagle Point at the
time he made his calls on horse
back. A doctor's saddle bags took
the place of the present day
drug store and laboratory and
"lamplight" surgery was the
order of the day.

the University of Washington,
July 21-23.

The bride is the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Percy Walker, Al
bany, and the bridegroom is a
son of Mrs. Howard Thompson,
Phoenix, and the late Mr. Thomp
son. Both are graduates of Ore
gon Technical institute. !
Larry Walker, her brother,
gave the bride in marriage. The
Rev. J. Boyd Patterson read the
double ring ceremony.
The bride wore a dress of
chantilly lace and nylon tulle
over satin, floor length, with a
short train. Her fingertip veil
was fastened to a Juliet cap
trimmed with pearls. She carried
a bouquet of white daisies and
stephanotis surrounding a white
orchid.
Miss Adrienne Walker, 6ister
of the bride, and maid of honor,
wore a yellow crystallette bal
lerina length dress with a large
picture hat of the same material.
Bridesmaids Sharon Walker,
Diane Walker, also sisters of the
bride, and Mary Ellen Coleman
wore dresses identical with that
of the maid of honor.
Best man was Don Hubble,
Klamath Falls. Charles Siver,
Larry Walker, and Robert L.
Goddard ushered.
The bride's mother wore a
street length beige cotton lace
and linen dress with powder blue
accessories and pink Rubrum
lily corsage. A street length tur
quoise cotton lace dress with
white accessories and pink ru
brum lily corsage were worn by
the bridegroom's mother.
About 100 guests attended a
reception in the church rooms
after the ceremonies. Mrs. Norma
Walker and Mrs. Ernest Karlise
poured. Mrs. George Siner, Mrs.
Barbara Lines, and Mrs. Ray
Ziegler served.
The newlyweds made a two-
day tdp to Oregon beaches
and are now living at 825 South
Oakdale avenue, Medford. The
bridegroom is employed by Alley
Lumber Co.
Contest Party
The Women's fellowship of
the First Baptist church, divided
into, three groups for a contest,
will be hostesses to the winning
group at a luncheon at 1 p.m.,
Thursday, July 21, at the home
of Mrs. R. L. Hague, 149 De
Hague avenue. Reservations

Vacationtime Brings Many
Visitors; Residents Leave
Summer visitors continue to arrive and residents are either
leaving or returning from annual vacations. Last week many
of the visitors arrived from out
Mrs. Desta Ziebeck, Crook
ston, Minn., is visiting with Mrs.
Hazel M. Dickson, 717 Sherman
street. The two arrived here by
plane last week after meeting in
Portland and making a trip to
Victoria and Vancouver, B. C,
Canada. They visited en route at
Mt. Baker, Wash. Mrs. Ziebeck
will be here for several days
before returning home where
she is employed by the Crook
ston Daily Times. Mrs. Dickson
is employed at the Medford
branch of the Secretary of
State's office.
Mr. and Mrs. G. C. Hawkins,
Kansas City, Mo.," arrived
Wednesday morning for a
week's visit with Mr. and Mrs.
C. F. McKibben, route 2, Cen
tral Point. Mrs. Hawkins, and
Mrs. McKibben are sisters. '
The two couples plan to motor
today to Crater Lake . National
park.
The Hawkins flew to San
Francisco before coming to the
valley, and will stop at Los
Angeles on their way back to
Missouri. Mr Hawkins is em
ployed by Trans-World air lines
in Kansas City. - .
Mr. and Mrs. Gunder Nordahl
and four children, New West
minister, B. C, Canada, left
Thursday after a two-week visit
with Mrs. Nordahl's mother,
Mrs. William Schuelke, Bealle
lane. This was Mrs. Nordahl's
first visit to the valley in nine
Lyears.
The Nordahls and Mrs.
Schuelke were guests xne week
end of Mr. and Mrs. H. G. End
ers, Ashland, at their cabin at
Lake o' the Woods.
Mrs. F. H. Reura, Findlay
apartments, has as her guest a
niece, Miss Doris Hogan of Mis
oula, Mont. Miss Hogan also is
visiting her cousin, Richard
Reum, Mrs. Reum and their fam
ily, Table Rock road.
Mrs. J. A. Sterk, Coffeyville,
Kan., arrived recently to visit
for about two months at the
home of her son-in-law and
daughters, Mr. and Mrs. C. W.

For Gold Hill
Minister, Wife
Gold Hill A reception will be
held in the Gold Hill Community
Methodist church dining room
following a program in the sanc
tuary, Sunday, July 17, at 7:30
p.m. for the Rev. and Mrs.
George . Harris Hatch of Port
land. The Rev. Mr. Hatch served
at Weston, Ore., last year and
is a retired minister.
He replaced the Rev. Gerald
Gear who recently , moved to
Odell, Ore. The Rev. and Mrs.
Hatch are living in the parson
age at 529 6th avenue, Gold
Hill. All in the community are
invited to meet the new minis
ter and his wife.
Indiana Couple
Visits Relatives,
Make Side Trips
Mr. and Mrs. C. T. Hines left
Ibis week for their home in
Indianopolis, Ind., after visiting
for a week at the home of Mrs.
Hines' brother and sister-in-law,
Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Daws, 524
North Grape street. Before ar
riving in Medford they visited I
another brother in Los Angeles.
While in Medford, the two cou
ples made trips to Crater Lake,
Crescent City and Klamath,
Calif. They also made a trip up
the Oregon coast to Waldport
and Alsea, where , they visited
at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C.
E. Stouder, an aunt and uncle
of Mrs. Daws.
This is the first trip Mr. and
Mrs. Hines have made to the
western United States. .

returned Thursday evening after
a 10-day visit with Mrs. Couey's
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles
McMahan, Hudson, O.
The family flew to the Ohio
city just south of Cleveland July
4 to see friends and relatives
they -knew before moving to
Medford from the area six years
ago.
The Coueys reside at 1829
Stewart avenue.
Mr. and Mrs. Walt Young and
family returned last Sunday
from a week-long trip to Nevada
and the Lake Tahoe area. They
visited friends in the region. "

Miss Patterson
To Be Married
In Rites Today
. News of interest here is the
wedding this afternoon of Miss
Virginia Patterson, daughter of
Gov. and Mrs. Paul L. Patter
son, to James Dollard, son of
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Dollard,
Claremore, Okla. The ceremony
will be read at the First Con
gregational church at Salem.
Miss Patterson was graduated
this spring from Stanford uni
versity. -
She was employed last year
at the Oregon Caves National
monument and has visited in
Medford.
Henselmans Hosts
For Anniversary
Cocktail Party
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Hensel-
jman, 333 Ardmore avenue, were
hosts at a cocktail party July 9
at their home honoring Mr. and
Mrs. Scott Davis on the Davises'
20th wedding anniversary. The
date also was the fifth wedding
anniversary of the Henselmans.
Mrs. Henselman is a daughter of
Mrs. Davis.
About 30 guests attended.
Later a nohost dinner was served
at the Rogue Valley Country
club. . ...'
Out-of-town guests for the
event were Miss Sandra Wurts,
granddaughter of the Davises,
and Miss Jackie Malmberg from
Oakland, Calif. They returned to
their homes Wednesday by plane.

Special Meeting
Olive Rebekah lodge will hold
a special meeting July 18 at the
Odd Fellows hall at 8 p.m. The
meeting is called to consider an
invitation to the Jacksonville
Jubilee and an entry in the pa
rade. An invitation has also been re
ceived from the Ashland Rebek
ahs to attend the 75th anniver
sary on August 30.

tend this special meeting.

For Observance
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Apple-
gate are scheduled to arrive by
plane today from Chicago, 111.,
accompanied by her daughter,
Judy. They are making the trip
especially to be here to observe
the 50th wedding anniversary
on Tuesday, July 19, of his par
ents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank L.
Applegate, 615 South Oakdale
avenue.
Open house will be held at the
Applegate home from 2 to 7
o'clock Tuesday afternoon and
friends of the couple are invited
to call on them.
Arriving also today for the ob
servance are other relatives, Mr.
and Mrs. Wayne Robertson and
children. Betsy, Tommy and
John; Mr. and Mrs. Roy Apple
gate and Mr. and Mrs. Sam
Eggiman, all of Portland; Mr.
and Mrs. Emil Becker, Vancou
ver, Wash., and Miss Jean Apple-
gate of Santa Barbara, Calif.
Mr. arid Mrs. Thomas Barry,
Klamath Falls, arrived here last
week. She is a daughter of the
Applegates.
A part of the observance will
be a nuptial mass for Mr. ana
Mrs. ADDlesate. read in the
Jacksonville Catholic church,
where they were married July
19, 1905. The church, no longer
in regular use, is being opened
for the occasion. The Rev.
Nicholas Deis will officiate.

To Move to Chico
A testimonial dinner and fare
well party for Mr. and Mrs. Cecil
M. Norris, who will soon leave
Medford with their family for
Chico, Calif., where Mr. Norris
will head the Dodge-Plymouth
dealership, was given by the
Democratic party of Jackson
county in the private dining
room of Henry's Drive inn last
week.
About 30 attended the spon
taneously .arranged affair with
numerous messages received
from others unable to attend. The
couple, long active in Democratic
party activities in the' county
were presented a myrtlewood
tray.
Mrs. Norris has acted as Dem
ocratic central committee secre
tary for., the past two years and
Mr. Norris was a charter member
and two-term president of the
Jackson County Democratic club.
He also was Democratic nomi
nee for Jackson county clerk in
1954. - . - - ,
Democratic Chairman Robert
Boyer presided during the dinner
program and the gift was pre
sented by Mrs. Albert Straus,
secretary of the Jackson County
Democratic club.
Bill McAllister
On Summer Cruise
Bill McAllister, son of Mr.
and Mrs. William M. McAllister,
2615 Hillcrest road, left by
plane last week for Norfolk, Va.,
where he is to embark for a sum
mer cruise in the Navy reserve
officers training program. He is
a midshipman. A senior student
at Harvard university, he visited
his parents for a month. The
cruise will close in September
and he will stay in the east to
enroll at the university.

Eagle Point Mrs. Emma
Messel, Lake Creek, announces
the engagement of her niece,
Miss Maxine Welch, to Eddie
Peile. son of Mr. and Mrs. Al
fred Peile, Eagle Point. Both
are 1954 graduates of Eagle
Point High school.
At present Mr. Peile is at
tending Oregon Technical insti
tute. No date has been set for
the wedding.

ginning at 5 p.m. The festival
for the first time is scheduled
at the theater. If weather does
not permit, however, notices will
be posted at the box office with
directions to an indoor location.
Those in charge pointed out Sat
urday that the Heyday will go
on even if weather is threaten
ing.
The admission also includes
the ftfe for a buffet dinner which
will be catered by Omar's res
taurant. The program includes
songs by the madrigal singers,
pantomimes . by festival actors
and actresses and a tour of the
theater backstage. An opportu
nity will be provided for patrons
to meet the festival cast.
. Those with children are en

party for entertainment also will

ceremony July 2 at the home of
the bride's grandparents, Mr. and
Mrs. C. -P. Van Ortwick, 1369
Poplar drive, Medford. The Rev.
Mel Coffman, Myrtle Creek, pas
tor of the Church of Christ, Tri
City, officiated.
The bride is the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Clayton,
Eagle Point and the bridegroom
the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lee
Atchley, Ashland.
Wearing a white taffeta after
noon dress with white and yel
low carnations, the bride was
given in marriage by her father.
Maid of honor was Miss Eleene
Garrison, Jacksonville, cousin of
the bride, and L. Swinford, Ash
land, was best man. Miss Garri
son wore a green and white
dress. Her flowers were red and
white carnations.
After the wedding a reception
was held at the Van Ortwick's
home for 47 guests. Out-of-town
persons present at the ceremony
were cousins of the bride, Mr,
and Mrs. Herbert Christician and
their three children from Wheat
land, Wyo., a sister of the groom,
Mrs. Juanice Smith from Cran-
dall, Miss., and her two sons.
The couple will make their
home , in Ashland where Mr.
Atchley is employed as a choker
setter.
The bride attended Prospect
and Eagle Point schools. Mr.
Atchley received his education
in Ashland. He is an employee
of Von Phillips.
Visit Moores
Mr. and Mrs. Darwin Davis,
Washington, D. C, visited sev
eral days last week with Mr.
and Mrs. Tom Moore of the Val
ley Center Trailer court, North
Pacific mgway. The two couples
formerly were neighbors about
15 years ago in the capital city
when Mr. Moore was employed
as a civil service employee at
