Is there such a thing as a truly !
beautiful coin in the United I
States currency? I saw displayed
in a New York shop window a
coin that is really a thing of
beauty. It is an authentic Span
ish gold doubloon. Another beau
tiful coin in the same display
was one of the celebrated
"nieces of eieht" so freauently
referred to in tales of piracy.
The only truly beauuiui piece oi
United States currency I have
seen so far is the S20 cold piece
designed by St. Gaudens, which
was withdrawn from circulation
some years ago.
Among the Married
A Baltimorean wants to
know how she can stop -her hus
band from referring to her as
his "ball and chain." Very
simple problem. All she has to
do is to refer to him as her "ball
and chain." As for example,
when he is seen approaching at
a cocktail party or similar gath
ering she should comment:
"Well, here comes my ball and
chain." That's a sure fire cure.
Has been thoroughly checked
and tested. .
As, It Was
When George Jessel and Wal
ter Winchell were around 11,
they joined up with another kid
name Jack Wiener to form a
singing trio which performed at
a moving picture theater in Har
lem. They were billed as "The
Three Little Boys With the Big
Voices." I don't know what be
came of Jack Wiener.
Sidelights
Last year the nine traffic
courts in New York City han
dled about a million and a half
cases and collected about $9,000
000. in fines . . . Am asked if I
know anybody named Merry
Christmas. I ' don't. However, I
know of a Mary Christmas who
Is a member of the celebrated
Christmas family of Maryland,
famed as race horse owners,
breeders and trainers.
Ninth. Wife
The ninth Mrs. Thomas Man
ville, the former Anita Roddy-
Eden, is reported to have -done
very well as a night spot attrac
tion in London. She was paid
$1,500 a week. The nmth Mrs
Manville told reporters she was
extremely pleased with the
opportunity of earning some
money. She said, "Tommy only
pays me $280 a week and that
is hardly enough for a girl."
Please Not
Do, you know a 15 year, old
divorcee? There are about 250
15-year-old wives divorced every
year in the United States. Three
hundred and forty married wom
en of 15 years of age anually
become widows in this country.
Every year here nearly 15,000
girls of 15 years are married.
Asides
Those who should know claim
the best salesmen and insurance
agents are those in the 45 year
old to 60 year old age group...
Am asked . the real name of
George Burns, the comic actor,
of the team of Burns and Allen.
It is Nathan Birnbaum. Inciden
tally, the professional name used
by his whimsical partner is her
own. She was christened Grace
Ethel Cecil Rosalie Allen.
Progress
My progress continued to
astonish me. Now I have a
reader in Menocqua, Wis. He
says his uncle, Edward Schilling,
who is 87, still has all his natural
teeth. Am ' also informed that
another Wisconscnian is equally
fortunate. This is Dr. Arthur
Jennings of Milwaukee, who is
88. Doctor Jennings has had the
benefit of some expert knowl
edge in preserving his teeth. He
is a dentist. Come to think of it,
how about dentists? Do they
keep their natural teeth longer
than the average .person? I'll
have to get .some of the dental
nurses among our readers to
check on this. .
