Big Texas Evangelist, Former Grid Ace,
Plans Christian War Against Communism
New York (U.R) A raw
boned, crewcut Texan who has
turned the energy that once
made him a football star into
evangelistic fervor embarked to
day on a crusade to stockpile
the Christian message in a war
against Communism.
The Rev. Paul M. Stevens was
on his way to London with an
ambitious plan to inject the
word of God behind the Iron and
Bamboo Curtain by radio and
in time television.
Dr. Stevens, 39, a former left
end at Mississippi College who
carries a bulk of 202 pounds on
his six-foot, three-inch frame, is
en route to the Baptist World
Alliance meeting in London,
where 25,000 leaders from 60
countries will represent 21,000,
000 Baptists.
He said he will try to set up
a permanent organization to
stockpile programs of scripture,
religious music, and a brief
Christian message and make
them available to large and small
radio stations on the edge of
the Iron Curtain in Europe and
the Bamboo Curtain in Asia. '
Dr. Stevens, an ordained Bap
tist minister who has had sev
eral small pastorates, now is
director of the Radio and Tele
vision Commission of the South
ern Baptist Convention, which
represents 9,000,000 Americans.
His offices are in Fort Worth,
Tex. He left here by plane last
night as a delegate to the London-
meeting.
Get the Idea
Several months ago, he said
in an interview, he got the idea
of using mass communications
to get religion into Communist
curtain countries. As he envi
sions it, programs can be turned
out in many languages and re
corded on tape for use on radio.

to him: "Why can't we approach
radio stations in Free Europe
and Asia and offer them reli-

American technical knowledge
of broadcasting techniques with
other countries and would be
prepared to help train personnel.
Dr. Stevens said it would be
the first concerted campaign to
take religion around the world
by electronics.
Human Nature
Asked whether he was sure
persons in Communist dominat
ed countries would want to hear
religious programs, he said:
"I can't help but believe that
human nature is the same around
the world. Today there's a hun
ger in our world for religion

"There's no reason to believe
there's any less hunger for the
Christian message in Central
Europe and the Far East than
has been indicated in West Ger
many, France, England, and
Scotland."
Dr. Stevens said he believed
the financing could be handled
by voluntary contributions "by
missionary minded people.'
By their very natures, Com
munism and Christianity are at
war, he said. .
"Communism can't take this
World until it has stamped out
all opposition by the Christian
religion. Any resistance Commu
nism meets will be raised on a
belief in almighty God. Just
reading the scriptures and a
Christian message on our pro
grams will be waging war.

boat.

Portland Boy Hurt

Portland (U.R) Eight-year-old
Charles Earhart, Portland,
was in serious condition at a
Portland hospital today with a
deep head wound caused by a
fish gun arrow.
Surgeons removed the arrow
tip from the boy's head after an
accident in Westmoreland park
Wednesday.
Police said the steel-tipped
arrow was fired by an older bo"V
who left the park with two com;
pardons after the accident with
out giving his name. Officers
suggested the youth get in touch
with them voluntarily.
