Go in Front in
Pee Wee League
Medford Tigers took over
first place alone and Lone Pine
rose into third spot yesterday in
Pee Wee League baseball en
gagements. The Tigers tipped Central
Point 3 to 1 to bust a tie for the
top position and Lone Pine out
slugged Medford Wildcats 15 to
13 to replace that club in third.
Score of the Ashland-Jackson-ville
game was not reported.
Dennis Painter tossed a one
hitter for the Tigers, walking
two and whiffing eight. Bill An
horn held the Tigers to three
hits. He walked five and struck
out the same number.
One unassisted double play
helped Central Point. Louis Al
varez snagged a liner and step
ped on second base for the twin
kill.
Lone Pine and the Wildcats
played on the Shorty Miles'
field in Medford with the Piners
reportedly getting four homers
over a short outfield.
Grants Pass defeated Medford
5 to 4 in a practice Cub game
on Wednesday. - Johnny Jones
permitted GP only two hits. One
was a triple. The Climate city
boys came from behind in the
last inning when Jones yielded
three walks along with a single.
Medford got six hits but could
not use them for sufficient runs.
A regular league fray be
tween the Ashland and Medford
Cubs was postponed.

Drain, the defending cham
pion, goes into the second half
of the Southern Oregon Base
ball League season two games
in front of its nearest rival but
the Black Sox take on a rising,
upset-minded delegation as they
begin the second leg of their
title defense.
The Sox travel to Grants Pass
for the feature series Saturday
and Sunday in the SOL. Other
contests are Medford at Rose-
burg and Coquille at Bend. Ban
don has a bye.
Grants Pass, if it still has the
personnel on hand it had last
week end, should prove a tough
er customer for Drain than at
the opening of the season when
the Black Sox claimed two
triumphs. The Elks last week
end, of course, knocked off Co
quille which had been dead
locked with the Sox. Coquille
is the only club so far to bowl
over Drain in League play.
At Bend both ' Logger clubs
will be out to improve on their
first-time-around series. Coquille
and Bend divided in their start
er series.
Medford lost its previous
games to Roseburg and the lat
est series should indicate
whether rejuvenation has taken
place with a change in Cheney
Studs' managers. The Medford
nine will see its first SOL
rivalry under the helm of Jack
Cooney, first baseman, who has
replaced Clarence Mellbye in
the player-skipper role.
Joyce Vanairsdale, Newport,
Wash. Mike Simpson, Portland,
won junior and Ken Jones, Con
don, sub-jtmior. H. B. and Har
vey Carlisle were father and son
champions. Dr. G. E. Henton,
Portland copped the over 70
trophy and E. G. Henselman,
Medford, the 65-70 prize. Law
rence and Olive Holland, Reno,
Nev., were husband and wife
winners.
The tournament, biggest trap
shot in importance in Medford
history, may draw some 300
shooters from eight western
states and British Columbia.
Reservations are already in
from the Canadian province and
from Los Angeles.
Medford club members will
hold practice on Sunday with
one' of the main objectives to
check all 10 traps to see that
they are in working order for
the shoot. All shooters have
been urged to turn out in order
that traps can be given a
thorough workout.
CP-MEDFORD LEGION 9
HAS SUNDAY ENCOUNTER
Advertising in a program to
be distributed at the game and a
small admission charge for
adults and teenagers Those are
the means by which some funds
will be raised Sunday for the
Central Point-Medford American
Legion junior baseball nine when
it plays Ashland at the fair
grounds ball yard.
The funds will help the Dis
trict 44 championship aggrega
tion through its interdistrict
play-offs starting next week.
Sunday's diamond action will
be the only one in Medford over
the week end for local fans. It
will be non-district since the
regular league season is past and
the CP-Meds are filling in prior
to entering state eliminations.
The tangle is to go nine full
innings and will find Ashland,
a district contender until last
week end, attempting to gain
some measure of revenge. CP
Medf ord holds four wins over the
Lithians so far this year.
Thre Pitchers
All three home club pitchers
are billed to see duty with Fred
Herrmann, Duane Sides and
Henry Putney to toss three in
nings each. Its among Mark

Roseburg Hardtoppers Eye
Easy Money at Posse Oval
Roseburg's strong contingent
of drivers will be looking for
soft pickings again Saturday
night when they invade the Jack
son County speedway" here for
this month's second program of
hardtop auto racing.
The Douglas county boys have
come to consider the posse oval
an "easy money" track. They've
generally taken just about all of
the pot from the local car jock
eys. Whitey Dage headed the
Roseburg gang last time out on
the Medford track by capturing
both the A main and the A
trophy dash.
Attempt to bring the track
record back within their own
circle and to outgun the Rose
burg invaders will keep the Med
ford and vicinity drivers busy
throughout the whole evening.
Their anticipated extra effort
could mean tense entertainment
for the spectators.
Mark Eyed
Johny Boomer, Crescent City,
Calif., established a new Jeckson
County speedway time trial lap
mark of 19.80 seconds last week
and hopes to be back to improve
on the mark. Meanwhile a flock
of local skippers have set their
sights on bettering the new stan
dard themselves. .

I New York-OJ.R) Don Budge
one ox xne unnea staves ui
time tennis greats, replaced
Jack Kramer today as coach of
the American-Junior Davis Cup
squad for this year. Eight young
sters from 16 to 21 years old
will be picked to comprise the
squad next month.
Glendale's leadership in the
Rogue Valley baseball league is
safe this week but its margin
at the head of the circuit could
be whittled down.
Camp White is host to Glen
dale in a Sunday fucc. Other
loop encounters are Butte Falls
at Grants Pass, and Eagle Point
at Ashland.
Currently Glendale holds a 1 Vi
game spread over Grants Pass
and Camp White, which are tied
for second place. Camp White
inflicted on Glendale the only
setback it has suffered this sea
son. Grants Pass and Butte Falls
will be scapping to stay in con
tention for. the title while Eagle
Point and Ashland will mix to
break their cellar deadlock.
Only change in team positions
resulting from last week end's
scuffles was the Grants Pass
climb into second spot deadlock.
