A "reading disability" in the
child is indicated by such things
as these:
Letters are reversed so that
chicken comes out kitchen or
united becomes untied. Or the
child "reads show for slow, hot
for shot, up for down, civilian
for soldier. And if he "does see
soldier, he may both read and
spell it soldier or shoulder?" .
Also Spoiling
It may show up in his spell
ing too. They cited this exam
pie, from a theme written by an
18-year-old boy:
"The birds singe in the tress
At a sigmal the moth bird flies
up and disappears into the sun
rise. The air is fresh and clean
and virgin. Tub (but) the mate of
the mother is not so luck. With
a deautiful, bitiful milddle in
his throat he dies from the
blast of our gun. The crow
lies in a demoralizing blooby
mess."
They asked people to accept
"mind, body, and social be
havior as continuous . and pro
foundly related expressions of
the entire person." What be
havior' seems to go with read
ing disability? They said "the
young person hates to read. He
panics in a test. He may stam
mer .or send up other signals ot
tension like knee jerking, nail
biting, paper-tearing, ' face-fuss
ing, hair-pulling (both bis own
and that of other students.)
"Before six the child learned,
or failed to learn, by hearing,"
they said. "At about seven he
began to learn, or not to learn,
by reading. The child who has
determined to have no truck
with , grown-ups and their stern
world may protect himself from
understanding the written word
by a 'disability,' as he has al
ready protected himself from un
derstanding the spoken word by
a psychic deafness.
"Me and How" '
"Any year, even up to the age
of 60, he may turn up in a read
ing clinic. Even if " he limped
somehow through college, his
disability undiagnosed, he may
continue all his life to avoid
books, to. 'read too slowly,' to
'concentrate poorly,' and to 'fear
he may miss something', with
the result that he does a superb
job of self-sabotage. He reads
so slowly that he misses almost
everything."
The two psychologists were
lecturing physicians, by invita
tion, in the New. England Jour
nal of Medicine on a psycholo
gical ailment which is only now
being generally recognized and
about which present under
standing still is less than com
plete. However, this they stated
with complete certainty:
"These disabled readers, more
often than not, cannot forsee
themselves as any kind of a
whole adult. They envisage no
future, no success, no pattern,
They do not project themselves
as citizens, as earners, as spouses
or as parents. For them there is
only an insulated bit of time
and a temporary island of per
sonality: me and now.

Girl Slashed by Boat

Eugene (UJ!) A 13-year-old
Eugene girl who was slashed .by
the propellor of a speedboat in
an accident while water skiing
at Fern Ridge lake west of here
was in "fair condition" at a
local hospital today.
The girl was Marianne Thom
as, daughter , of Mr. and Mrs.
F. A. Thomas of Eugene. She
was struck by a boat driven by
Gerald Rowe Tuesday at dusk.
Rowe said he swerved his boat
to avoid the girl, who was water
skiing behind a boat driven by
her father. But the oncoming
craft spun sideways, and Mari
anne received severe slashes on
her right leg and arm from the
25 horsepower craft's propellor
blades. '
