New Heat Wave

A warming trend moved In on
the eastern half of the nation to
day and the weatherman warned
that it might mean a heat wave
similar to the one that scorched
the east for 10 days until last
Sunday.
Temperature were generally
five to 10 degrees higher and
going vp. Hot, but drier, weath
er was also the outlook for the
west.
Meanwhile, showers and thun
der storms' brought some relief
in the south, southwest and Mis
sissippi valley. The heaviest
rainfall during the night was 1.57
Inches at Guyman, Okla.
At Rocky Mount, N.C., the
rain got out of hand yesterday
and averaged four inches in the
Tar river watershed.
. The rain swollen river was
expected to crest at 2V4 feet
above the flood stage today and
five feet above at Tarboro, N.C.
Yesterday the river flooded low
crop lands.
Overseas, the death- toll in
Europe's heat wave has climbed
. to nearly 200. Fierce storms
accompanied the climb in tem
peratures, and damaged rich
grape crops in France and Italy.

Become Klamath DA

Klamath County District At
torney, today appeared a likely
candidate to succeed Frank
Alderson as the county's district
attorney.
Humble yesterday was recom
mended by the county bar as
sociation to replace Alderson,
who is scheduled to become chief
deputy prosecutor in Lane coun
ty July 25. '
The county court has approv
ed the recommendation, and
only Gov. Paul Patterson's ap
proval was necessary before it
would go into effect.
The association also announc
ed that the district attorney's
salary would.be increased from
$4500 to $7500 a year. Alderson,
a crusading prosecutor, had said
the low salary was one of the
reasons for his resignation. .
The average size of farms in
Kentucky increased from 74.4
acres in 1935 to 89 aeres in 1950.
The total number of farms de
creased from 278,298 to 218,476.

Hood River Death
Kicking Admitted
The Dalles (U.R) One of
five transients under investiga
tion in the mysterious death of
Robert Easley, 48, yesterday
signed a statement admitting he
kicked Easley in the side for
calling him a vile name.
Boss Matchen confessed the
kicking after 2Vz days of ques
tioning by Hood River sheriff s
officer and state police.
.Easley died in a local hospit
al Sunday from the effects of
broken ribs and a punctured
lung, according to Sheriff Ru
pert Gillmouthe. Saturday night
he appealed for help at the Hood
River railroad station, telling po
lice he had been kicked in the
side by a friend during a fight
in a box car.
-Police took him to a Hood Riv
er hospital where attendants said
his condition did not appear ser
ious. He was not admitted for
treatment.

ing motorist walking on High
way. 30 east of Hood River.-He
was taken to the hospital - at

three toes with a power lawn
