Heyday Sunday First Event
Of Shakespearean Festival
Ashland The 1955 Oregon Shakespearean festival gets under
way here Sunday with the first official event of the season, the
annual Bard's Heyday.
Sponsored by Tudor guild, festival auxiliary organization, all
proceeds from Heyday go to the actors scholarship fund.
Traditionally held on an estate
in the Rogue River valley. Hey
day will take place in the festi
val theater for the first time this
year. Features of the afternoons
activities will be Elizabethan
games, a buffet supper, and tours
backstage in the theater.
Costumiers
In the costume room visitors
will see head costumier, Douglas
Russell, Florida State university,
and his assistants, Agnes David,
University of Texas, and Inge
Schmidt,- Stanford university, at
work on the season s costumes.
Helping out in the costume room
are other company members and
townspeople. All of the costumes
this year were designed by Mr.
Russell, just returned from a
year of study at Stratford-on-
Avon, except for Miss David's
designs for "Timon of Athens."
Mr. Russell brought back from
England more than 200 yards of
material for the costumes, in
cluding felts, metallic cloth, and
wools, the latter' to be used for
"Macbeth." x
As usual, about half of the
costumes this year will be new,
and half remodels of old cos
tumes. .The same costume is
neve used twice without seve
ral changes, and each year's
shows present a new trend in de
sign and execution. Russell esti
mates that by the end of the sea
son the festival wardrobe, begun
from scratch in 1948 after the
theater burned, will have more
than 2000 costumes.
Problems
The costume room has a vari
ety of unique problems to deal
with this year, as usual. The cos
tumes for "Timon" must be basic
ally ' Elizabethan with a sug
gestion of classic drapery; and
an illusion of unreality must be
created 'for "A -Midsummer
Night's Dream.",In spite of other
problems, however, costume peo
ple agree that the most preplex
ing one yet is the actor who can
wear none of the old helmets, the
most difficult costume article to
make, because his head has five
corners instead of the tradition
al four.
The festival season opens on
August 1 with "JJream," and con
tinues throughout the month pre
senting four plays in rotation
nightly, with special perform
ances of "Timon" Aug. 23 and 29.
Other scheduled plays are "Mac
beth," "All's Well That Ends
Well," and "Henry VI, part 3."
Also scheduled are free concerts
of Elizabethan music on the four
Sundays in August.
