Overtime pay in the U. S. A.
was originated by Richard Teller
Crane of the Crane Company
just about 60 years ago. In 1894,
to be exact. In that year Crane in
augurated a policy of time, and
a half pay for overtime, and
double pay for Sundays and hol
idays. Employees of other estab
lishments were paid nothing for
overtime. They were just given
supper money. This was usually
50 or 75 cents.
Widows
How difficult is it for a widow
with a number of children to
secure a husband?. Some widows
with several offspring claim it is
practically impossible. All de
pends upon the appearance, in
telligence and home managing
talents of the widowThe best
matrimonial prospect for a wid
ow with children is a widower
with children. Not so long ago
Cornelia Smit of Hoorn, Holland,
a widow with 20 children, mar
ried a handsome widower named
Retrus Mettes, the father of 11
children. All 31 children of the
pair attended the wedding.
Passing By
Conrad Hilton, hotel manage
ment genius, is eligible for mem
bership in the Club Noel, having
been born on Christmas Day. The
second largest hotel in the world,
the Conrad Hilton, Chicago, is
named in his honor. He is the ex
husband of ZsaZsa Gabor and the
former father-in-law of Elizabeth
Taylor.
Superior Sex
The claim that the female is
the "superior sex" continues to
be taken very seriously by some
of our countrywomen. As for ex
ample, a woman in Georgia was
recently arrested for "husband
beating." She weighed 192. The
weight of her spouse,, poor fel
low, was not stated.
Blondes
In London recently a beautiful
ash blonde model shot and killed
her lover who tried to desert her
for another female. This seems
confirmation of the claim of the
horses and women experts that,
when cast aside by a lover, the
blonde shoots the lover while the
deserted brunette -is inclined to
hoot herself.
Asking
' Queries from clients. Q. What's
the record for a trip from New
York City (Manhattan) to At
lantic City? A. Don't know the
record. However, the trip can
be made by the average motorist
in two hours and 20 minutes
from Broadway and Forty-second
st. via Garden State Parkway.
. . . Q. What major city in the
United' States has the best sum
mer climate? A. That would
be San Francisco, the slogan of
which is, "The City That Nature
Air Conditions." It is delightfully
cool in the town by the Golden
Gate, even in the middle of Aug
ust. . . Q. How long ago was
the film "Ecstasy" produced?
A. Film you refer to, starring
Hedy LaMarr, was produced in
Czechoslovakia about 22 years
ago.
Parodies
Do you recall when parodies
on popular songs were featured
by comedians? If not, cease call
ing yourself a young old-timer.
One of my favorite parodies was
that on the song titled "There's a
Girl in the Heart of Maryland
With a Heart that Belongs to
Me." The parody featured by that
whimsical pair of comedians,
Hoey and Lee, was titled
"There's a Girl in the Heart of
Maryland With a Watch That Be
longs to Me." .The parody is not
entirely a thing of the past. Not
so long ago Joe E. Lewis ren
dered a parody on the song titled
"I Want a Girl Just Like the Girl
Who Married Dear Old Dad."
Joe's parody was titled: "I Want
a Girl Just Like the Girl Who
Married Dear Old Harry James."

When Warding Off In-Laws
Be Careful of Family Feud
You cannot handle members
of the family in the same way
that you can handle outsiders.
That is what I tried to explain
to the woman who wrote: .
(Q) "How do you handle
people when you do every
thing to show them they're not
I1 welcome, but
they still hang
around? I am
referring to
my husband's
sister and her
husband. We
lived in their
house in the
country, but
when tilings
started to go
bad. I told my husband we had
better move to avoid a fight. I
thought by moving things
would be more peaceful, but .
we no sooner moved than they
sold their house and moved
near us. Every chance they
get they hang around my hus
band to get him to go out with
them and he is just the type
that can't say 'No.'
"I happen to know a few
things about my sister-in-law's
husband's past that would
make a lot of trouble for them
if I let it out. If that is the
only way to get rid of them
for good, I think it is worth it, .
After all, they're not concern
ed about . any trouble they
make for us. Can you give me
any advice on how to handle
such people?" '
(A) My first advice is, "Don't
tell tales on your sister-in-law's
husband." It would be bad
enough to do that to a stranger,
but with a member of the family,
it might start a family feud
which would mean that your
husband would have his whole
family turn against him and you.
Surely you would not want this
to happen. - '
If your husband does what his
sister wants him to do, it sug
gests that he is genuinely fond
of her and enjoys being with her.
After all, he is a grown man
and could point out to her that
he had some other engagement
if he did not want to go out.
To avoid family friction, why
not build up a circle of friends

give him a ready excuse.
Then, when you know you

The red-haired

Aline Mosbr her Broadway

coming for the star, who left
Hollywood two years ago even
before her sensational bathing
suit scene in "From Here To
Eternity" was released and turn
ed her into a glamour queen.
Now she's beginning a new
life in the movies changed, she
believes, by her portrayal of
the daring woman in "Tea and
Sympathy" and the sensual
Army wife in "Eternity."
No Change
"I'm not changed one iota;"
she said firmly. "But the atti

has definitely changed. They
used to think I was a bit prissy!
' "You have two strikes against
you in America if you're from
England. They automatically
endow you with a tiara.
"And if you're French! You're
a madame or a courtesan."
The actress sat tor an inter

hair-dressing department while
a hair expert dyed her red locks
blonde for her return to movies
in "The Proud and The Pro
fane." The film; co-starring Wil
liam Holden, takes her on loca

another bathing suit love scene.
"But not quite as drastic as
the one in 'Eternity'," she added.
Censored Version
After the Paramount film she
returns to Hollywood for the

stage musical, "The King and I,"
"And if they make it is Siam I'll

'- MGM brass and scores of cele

more curtain calls on her stage

"I was scared out of my life

can be a cold audience. But after
it was received that way, . I
couldn't "move the next day. I
was so emotionally strung up.
"Yes,' 'she reflected, "if you
