land pitched and tossed in a
choppy sea, the turncoats lay
whitefaced and silent in their
third-class dormitory bunks.
" The three William A. Cow
art, 22, Oalton, Ga., Lewis W.
Griggs, 22, Jacksonville, Tex.,
and Otho G. Bell, 24, Olympia,
Wash. are on their way to
San Francisco.
They spent 19 months in Red
China after refusing repatriation
at the Panmunjom prisoner of
war exchange. Finally, they de
cided they would rather come
home to an uncertain future
than to live under Communism.
Since leaving Hong Kong, they
have spenttheir time quietly
aboard ship. Thep appear bored.
Occasionally they have taken a
drink , in the third-class lounge,
but most of the time they have
just lain in their bunks.
Other passengers have often
seen Griggs alone on deck, ap
parently praying.
Guards Continue To
Quit af Walla Walla
Walla Walla (U.R) The I
number of guards at the Wash
ington State penitentiary who
have resigned in the wake of
last week's riot was reported to
have risen to 10 today.
Eugene Winne, one of the cor-
rection guards held hostage dur
ing the 26 hour rebellion, said
he resigned "because there is no
safety in the prison."
' Winnett said prison officials
"made the cons a lot of promis
es they can't keep" in order to
settle the riot and free the nine
men held hostage.
"It just won't work," he de
clared. "If the officials don't
keep these promises I think it
will happen all over again. Only
it will be worse. I don't think
the cons will fool around next
time."
The three have only the clo
thing they are wearing with
them open shirts, slacks, shoes
and windbreakers. ' .
Cowart said Tuesday that the
Chinese people are beginning
"passive resistance" to the Com
munist regime. ,
"When I first went into China,
people actively participated in
the mandatory Communist meet
ings," he said. "They are silent
today and waiting. This passive
resistance is everywhere." .
He claimed the Chinese peo
ple are looking to America for
liberation.
He said an attack by an Am
erican Army battalion on a
Chinese, Communist port would
start the disintegration of the
Red-held mainland.
