After Long Service
Camp White Mrs. Dorothea
Glass, librarian at the Veterans
Administration domiciliary cen
ter here during the past five
years, is retiring this month after
30 years service with the federal
government.
, Mrs. Glass began with the de
partment of agriculture in 1925,
where she worked three years
in the marketing service. She
started with the VA at the TB
hospital at Legion, Tex., and was
at the San Fernando, Calif., hos
pital for 19 years before coming
to Camp White in 1951.
Mrs. Glass plans to reside with
her two brothers, living at San
Jose. Calif.

bers, patients and personnel
using the library facilities dur
ing her tour of duty cere.
Reception Held
Ha spoke at a reception in her
honor at which time Manager .
K. Ricker presented her with
the 30-year gold pin awarded
government employees at the
conclusion of this period of ser
vice. He also presented a gift
of a matched set of brooch and
ear ornaments of agate, the pro
duct of Camp White workman
ship. Library and special services
associates attended the party Fri
day afternoon. Another gift was
a cook book. "I will have a
chance to do a little reading my
self on a subject I know very
little about," she observed.
Miss Grace Stuhr, chief nurse,
and Miss Joan McCready, special
services secretary, assisted in
the serving of refreshments of
cake and coffee.

Camp White The Hollywood
Canteen Service has designated
Camp White as being among
Veterans ' Administration hospi
tals to receive gifts made pos
sible by a surplus account re
main from contributions for war
benefits.
Two ebony table model TV
sets are being sent to the dom
iciliary station by this organiza
tion, composed of public spirited
citizens of the movie capital.
Four TV installations are now
in use here. The other sets were
donated by service organizations
in Oregon.
Boston (U.PJ In the winter
of 1951 a child was born to a
student nurse at a private hos
pital, a child that became the
pawn in a grim legal battle.
. The mother was not married
but everything had been ar
ranged even before the infant
drew its breath. Marjorie Mc
Coy's physician had found a
childless couple who would be
glad to adopt tiny Hildy McCoy.
Dr. Herman C. Sands, of Sa
lem, Mass., didn't tell Marjorie
who the adopting parents were.
She didn't ask. Later she said
she assumed they were Catholics
as she was.
Adoption Papers Signed
Hildy, now four years old, was
bom Feb. 23, 1951, On March 5
her mother signed the adoption
papers and the baby was turned
over to Mr. and Mrs. Melvin B.
Ellis of Brookline, Mass. The
Ellises are Jewish.
Three weeks later, March 27,
1951, Marjorie was asked to sign
the adoption papers a second
time so her signature could be
notarized. She learned then for
the first time that the Ellises
were Jews.
A state law requires that adop
ting parents must be of the same
religious faith as the child's nat
ural mother "whenever practi
cal." Probate Judge James F. Rey
nolds, who later ordered the
Ellises arrested for "open defi
ance of the law," has found that
Marjorie withdrew her consent
to the adoption "in the late sum
mer or early fall of 1951." That's
less than a year after surrender
ing Hildy.
Regional Safety
Conference Slated
A regional industrial safety
conference for Jackson, Jose
phine, and Klamath counties
will be held in Medford some
time this fall, according to the
State Industrial Accident com
mission. Preliminary plans were .dis
cussed bjr the planning commit
tee at an organizational dinner
meeting last week at the Jack
son hotel. Members of the com
mittee from Jackson county are
William Burt, Herbert Sampert,
Chann, .Drew, Robert Shaw,
Claude' . Haggard, Glen Best,
Gene Foresee, Arthur Davies
Bert Wright, H. Barnhart, and
Frank Suttcliff.
'A number of regional confer
ences will be held around the
state this year, supplanting the
annual Governors Safety Con
ference. Between 200 and .400
persons are expected here for
the southern Oregon meeting.

convicted of setting the fire in
a vacant building that spread
and burned down four homes
had a ready explanation for the
judge: "The place was an eye
sore. It haunted me." '

However, the record shows
that the motion to withdraw con
sent was not filed until June 9,
1A53 nearlv two years after
Mariorie sisned it.
Judge Reynolds nullified the
adoption promptly on June 15,
1953, but the Ellises kept Hildy
and appealed to the Massachus
etts Supreme Court which up
held the lower court last Feb
ruary.
On June 28 the high court re
fused the stay of execution of
Judge Reynolds' order to surren
der Hildy. On July 1, he issued
an order to arrest the Ellises.
Their lawyer successfully chal
lenged the arrest order on con
stitutional grounds but counsel
for Mrs. Doherty promptly won
a writ of habeas corpus for the
child as the lawyers boxed and
sparred.
Mather Wont Talk
And there it lies. The Ellises
are bitter. Marjorie, now Mrs.
Marjorie McCoy Doherty, will
not talk to newsmen. She intends
to turn Hildy over to the Cath
olic Charitable Bureau for adop
tion by Catholic parents if the
court order is carried out.
Ellis, owner of a dry cleaning
firm, said he was "prepared to
go to jail. That would be my
small protest against the law."
In an effort to keep the child
the Ellises have agreed to raise
the girl as a Catholic.
