QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
GIVE THE BABY A BREAK
After 15 years of married life we
are blessed with our first baby now
10 weeks old, and although friends
made all sorts of gloomy prognostica
tions about a woman of my age
having her first baby, thanks to that
wonderful booklet "Preparing for Ma
ternity" I breezed through the whole
thing with the greatest of ease . . .
we love and cuddle him now and then,
though I suppose we shouldn't . . .
(Mrs. R. C.)
Answer No objection to cuddling
the baby occasionally, provided he is
all paid for and provided you spelled
it correctly. Cuddling, not coddling.

Answer to Saturday's Futxle
HOW TO BURN
COMFORTABLY
Sunburn can be painful, disfig
uring and dangerous. It spoils
many a vacation when the vaca
tionist tries to get tanned in a
are more sensitive to
sunlight than brunets. So if your
skin is fair you should shorten
the duration of exposure some
what. If your complexion is dark
you may safely lengthen the
duration of exposure to direct
sunlight in the first days of your
vacation, if you choose to follow
the schedule here outlined.
One who lives, works, studies
or plays indoors should hot for
get to wear some suitable pro
tection for the lips when exposed
to strong sunlight, as when in
bathing, on an outing in the
mountains or at the beach or on
the water boating or fishing. Lip
sunburn is painful and slow to
heal. To prevent it wear either
heavy lipstick or zinc oxide oint
ment. It is well to begin taking sun
baths daily in advance of vaca
tion, in order to accustom your
skin to exposure. .
First Day. Between 11 a.m. and
1:30 p.m. expose only the legs
from knees down and the arms
from elbows down, for five
minutes.
Second Day. Repeat that same
exposure for five minutes,
then expose the same areas for
five minutes more plus arms
from shoulders to elbows for
five minutes.
Third Day. Repeat yesterday's
exposure, but the legs and
arms for 15 minutes, arms
from elbows to shoulders for
15 minutes, front of thighs
for 5 minutes.
Fourth Day. Repeat as on third
day, but legs and arms 20
minutes, arms from elbows to
shoulders 15 minutes,front of
thighs 10 minutes, back 5 min
utes. .
Fifth . Day. Legs and arms 25
minutes, arms from elbows to
shoulders 20 minutes, front of
thighs 15 minutes, back ten
minutes, front of chest 5 minutes.
Sixth Day. As before, but each
area 5 minutes more and fin
ally for 5 minutes the face and
neck, taking care to wear dark
lipstick and smoked glasses or
dark ventilated sun goggles.
By the end of the week you
should have enough tan to pro
tect you against ordinary expo
sure. Incidentally, it is absurd to
imagine that anything you. can
apply to the skin will promote
tanning and at the same time pre
vent sunburn. Only clothing,
heavy salve or dark paint can
prevent sunburn if the exposure
is prolonged unduly and the skin
will not tan if it is too well pro
tected from sunlight.
One unaccustomed to exposure
to the sun should remember that
