Pond To Be Cured
Comanche, Tex.- The halt
and the lame came by the hun
dreds today to the ranch of Jesse
F. Reese to cover themselves, at
a cost of more than a dollar an
hour with dirt from a mildly
radio-active pond he has.
Reese, 52, a farmer, is mak
ing $200 or $300 a day from sick
persons who hope to get some
benefit from dust the Atomic
Energy Commission won't bother
with. He lives 12 miles from
Comanche at the end of a dusty,
mesquite covered road called
"Uranium Avenue."
The sign was put up, he said,
by Mrs. Fred Hall, a neighbor,
who got tired of visitors asking
her where his farm is. Reese now
has three buildings on his 260
acre ranch where persons with
arthritis, . rheumatism, spastic
colon, headaches, sinus and can
cer ait from morning until late
at night.

dust by an attendant They can
bury their hands in a box of
dust in their lap. For those with
neck and head ailments, there
re socks full of dust which they
can drape around their necks or
cross their skulls.
Reese will not say that this
will help them at all.
Sign Statement
. In fact, before he will let them
- ait down, he makes them sign a
statement that they are visiting
his ranch voluntarily, that they
assume full responsibility for the
"treatment," that nobody has
asked them to come to the farm
and nobody has promised them
that they will be helped by the
dust.
Nevertheless, people flocked
to Reese's place and the number
is growing every day. He charges
each visitor $2 for burying his
hands and feet an hour and a
half. He said experts have ad
: vised him that this is about as
. long as the visitors should cover
their bands and feet with the
: dust. .
Reese estimates 5,000 or 6,000
persons have visited the ranch
sine one day in 1953 when a
;' man from Washington state
knocked at his door and asked
: whether he could sit in his pond.
According to Reese; uranium
; hunters flew over his place in
a plane three or four years ago

: "I found out about it," he said,
1 "and got me a geiger counter. It
worked a little. I had had phle

leg for 15 years," he said.

but I had been on crutches part
of-the time."
Reese said he didn't start to
charge until about half of the
total number who have visited
the ranch had paid him a call.
After he started charging for the
privilege, his business continued
to grow.
"If business continues to in
crease, he said, "I'll increase my
facilities. What we want to do
with it (the money) is build a
boy's ranch. The Lord gave it to
us and we're going to give it
back to Him," he said.

Police Called lo Two Week End Accidents
State police were called to two
accidents over the week end,
both of which resulted in minor
damage and injuries.
At 12:55 a jn. Sunday a car
driven by Ralph Allen Andrews,
22, of Newberg, Ore., went out
of control and rolled over several
times near Birdseye creek on
Highway 99, police said. An

accident on Highway 234
three miles south of Gold Hill
about 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Oper
ators of the cars, Loyd Johnson,
33, of 1832 North Riverside ave.,
and Ben Day, 43, Sams Valley,
were uninjured. Minor damage
was sustained by the autos.
