I wouldn't have bothered with
it at all, but Jack was deter
mined to have it right now.
"What if I don't have a. house
with a fireplace yet! I'm going
to some day, and I'll never be
able to get a mantel cheaper
than this."
I had to agree with him on
that score. With an outlay of
only $3 for a fireplace mantel
of solid oak mounted on Ionic
columns of the same material,
he was virtually being paid to
take it away.
It was a piece that was far
from being antique. Maybe it
had been made in the mid-1 920s,
but certainly not much before.
Over-all, its width was 60 inches
with an interior width of 41.
Maximum height was 50 inches
with an inner height of 39.
Width of the shelf was exactly
one foot.
Later that afternoon, when a

Jim grabbed me by the arm,
but he didn't need to. The cul
tured accents, let alone the un
usual vocabulary of the distin
guished, looking bum who had

wish to let your generosity get
the better of you."
I reached in my pocket but
Jim beat me to it. "Tell us," he

"Why, I used to collect coins
myself ... ah, "different from
this way," the bum said. "Mat
ter of fact, one time I had a com
plete run of trimes, samples of
every three-cent piece ever is

coaster and picked up the piece
of jade that lay beside it.
For some minutes now the
sight of it had been bothering
me. It looked as utilitarian as
a little gear or sprocket, but the
misty grey-green of its color and
. the simple, though diabolical
looking, dragon that seemed to
carve its way along the narrow
surface of the piece had all the
mystery of a thousand years.
-The use of the stone, even'
how it was intended to -serve
as an ornament, was beyond me.
It was about an inch and a half
wide, a good five inches long
and roughly a quarter of an inch
thick, except at the ends and
in the middle where narrow
strips nearly half an inch deep
had been left running across the
width of the piece.
"Well," said Ed taking the

pose. It had certain magical
' powers, such as the Chinese so
often attributed to jade amulets,

ones that were put out after the
new Mint Act that changed coin
age in 1854," he added.

it up for us.
. An 1855 trime? No, no. It
wasn't worth anything like $65,
he said. That was far too high
a figure. Why, $27.50 would be
absolute tops. Unless, of course,
what we happened to have was
a proof coin. .Now if that was
the case, even $70 would not
be too high a price.

man last week who had just
come here from Singapore," he

When they get .sick or need
their toe noils clipped, they can
be driven in an ambulance with
a siren and two-way radio to the
plushiest pet hospital in the
land.
This "polyclinic hospital for
pets" and "pet health plan" are
the inspirations of a group in
cluding movie star Glen Ford,
ex-TV producer Ed Lewis and
William Bowman, former head
of California's Blue Shield hos
pital plan (for two-footed pa
tients).
Special Kitchen
The pet hospital will feature a
drug store for dogs and cats
headed by an "animal pharma
cist", an x-ray laboratory, 13
wards with 680 "beds", a full
time animal pathologist and a
dietary expert with a special
kitchen. - '
On a closed-circuit television
set student veterinarians can
watch a surgeon operate on
some rare animal ease, just like
on "Medic." .
Two-footed visitors will be
regulated. They can see their
pet patients only on the closed
circuit TV set or through one
way windows into the 13 wards,
so the dogs and cats can recuper
ate undisturbed.
Ford (a two-dog man) and his
colleagues announced their plan
at a press conference where a
model of the $450,000 new hospi
tal was on display.
"Our . hospital, now being
built, will have the most rigid
standards applied to human hos
pitals,': Bowman explained.
"Health insurance for pets is
here! We hope to make this plan
nation-wide!

against! Each dog will have sep
arate runs and cages sp there
can be no nose-to-nose contact!
"Of course," he added, "we ex
pect the first pet applicants to
be chronic hyprochondriacs. It's
the same way when I started
human health insurance."
The hospital also will offer
training lessens, free puppies, a
lost-and-found service and a
beauty salon for poodles. But
hydrants and dog swimming
pools are missing.
"No, they're playing this
pretty straight," said one of the
group's numerous press agents.
"Plenty of trees on the ground,
though.
Nehru Scoffs at

idea that Russia's current
"friendship" campaign is due to
weakness. .
Anybody who- believes the
Soviets' present policy is
prompted by weakness is suf
fering under a "completely er
roneous impression," Nehru told
a press conference. .
The Indian statesman made
the statement in reply to ques
tions concerning his current "co
existence" tour of Asian and
European countries. Among the
countries he visited were Russia,
Poland and Yugoslavia. .
Nehru met newsmen at his
hotel after being received in a
private audience by Pope Phis."
The audience concluded the
Premier's whirlwind visit to
Italy, a country outwardly cool
to his "co-existence" policies.
It. was Nehru s first meeting
with the Pope, although he has
passed through Rome several
times since World War II.
Following the press confer
ence, Nehru was to leave for
London for pre-Geneva "talks
with British leaders.
