FIREMEN OVERCOME Fire Capt. Vernon Ritchey. was over
come by smoke and lack of oxygen at one point during the fire
Friday. He is shown as he started to regain consciousness down
stairs in the Medford Furniture store before it was closed off.
The nature of the materials burning made a particularly nasty
type of smoke which penetrated masks such as the one on the
fireman at left. The volunteer at right wipes his eyes from the
effects of the acrid smoke. Captain Ritchey recovered and stayed
on the job the rest of the night. (Franklin Jones photo)

Teeth
An 83-year-old Pennsylvania
still has all his original teeth.
That I recently reported. To get
an idea how unusual this is, con
sider what dental experts say.
They say a man of 45 is expected
to have 19 of his original teeth
left. At 55, he should have 14
real teeth left. At 65, about 10.
By the way. Sir, if 45 or over
how are you doing as to teeth

Adopt White Sfepson
Washington (U.R) .The U.S.
Court of Appeals has ruled that
a Washington Negro may adopt
his six-year-old white stepson.
In so doing, it rejected a lower
court's contention that the adop

ter of the "social status" of a
white person because his legal
father then would be a Negro. ,

Profitable Play
Did you know there was a
stage play that made over $1,-
000,000 profit and was never
presented in New . York City?
That was the stage version of
Harold Bell Wright's novel "The
Shepherd of the Hills." It was
presented on tour theaters
throughout the Middle West and
was always a sellout. - ;
Get It Right
As to whether that feminine
first name should be spelled
Arline with an "i" or Arlene
with an "e," a Bostonian writes,
"Arline was the name of the
heroine of Balfe's opera "The
Bohemian Girl." The name is
definitely spelled with an 'i.' Si
Miss Arline Judge is, right. Miss
Arlene Dahl is in error."
Specialist
Is your wife generously pro

heard of the . Paris designer
named Jean Desses. He special

called "oomph." That is. those

of . Lillian Russell. ; Monsieur
Desses tells his clients to forget
dieting. Says his styles are adapt
ed for "curved hips and full
busts." ;
Dead Weight
'Race track official programs
should list actual weight of rider
next to the weight which the
horse he is to ride has been
scheduled to carry. For example,
Bill Shoemaker, weighs 103. If
he is riding a horse assigned to
carry 126 pounds, that horse will
carry 23 pounds dead weight,
That "dead weight" is definitely
a threat to the horse's chances.
Therefore, the public should
know about it. - :
