traveling display, a free show
honoring the 50th anniversary of
the industry, will come to Med
ford October 22 and 23. -
The show has one display in
corporating features of the
"Fifty Golden Ideas" for fir ply
wood construction unveiled dur
ing the annual meeting at Port
land in mid-June. Other displays
tell of the material's range of
uses, of industry promotion
through the Douglas Fir Ply
wood association, and the story
of markets and shipping.

Commander Succumbs

Frank H. Joskey, of Passaic,
former national commander of
the 29th (Blue and Gray) Divi
sion Association, died Wednes
day at the Veterans Adminis
tration hospital here. .
Joskey . was wounded while
serving with the "Blue and
Gray" in France in World War
I. The division was composed of
New Jersey and Maryland Na
tional Guardsmen.

thorities have blamed anil-day
old railway strike for a two-
train collision in 'which six per
sons were killed.
Officials said the accident was
caused by a lack of communica
tions resulting from the cutting
of telegraph lines by strikers.
Three soldiers and three railway
men were killed in the crash of
the freight trains.
BONES AND TEETH ARE

According to the physiology
textbook used in the public
schools in the 19th century, as
some old-timers may remember,
"the composition of the bones at
maturity is about one part ani
mal in two parts mineral mat
ter. In youth it is nearly half
and half, while in old age the
mineral is greatly in excess."
The professor who conjured
that out of thin air (there was no
precise chemical analysis of the
bones available in the 1870s) did
not explain just how the change
came about. But certainly he
implied that somehow between
youth and old age the bones lost
considerable animal matter or
acquired more mineral matter.
In an article spread over 20
pages of a popular magazine a
few months ago, the author
stated correctly that the bones
of elderly people are easily bro
ken, due mostly to gradual de
mineralization of the bones, es
pecially loss of calcium," and this
in turn is partly due to insuffi
cient calcium intake during the
years preceding.
So far, so good. But then the
author reverts to the 19th cen
tury, where so many physicians
and dentists still mark time, to
recite with the old-timers: "Once
the demineralization has hap
pened, there is little or no help
for it."
If this means that there's little
help for it after the bone is bro
ken or the tooth has a cavity, it
seems reasonable. If it means
calcium can't be restored : to
bones which have lost part of
their calcium, it is illogical, for
physiologists 'know that the
bones can and do Teceive and
store calcium (become mineral
ized) as long as the individual's
intake of calcium and vitamin D
is adequate.
As a top authority- (Best &
Taylor, Physiological Basis of
Medical Practice) puts it:
"It is perhaps well to point out
that adult bone is not simply an
inert structural material but liv
ing tissue whose mineral compo
sition fluctuates under the in
fluence of other body functions.
The trabeculae of the bone, as
shown by Aub and associates,
constitute a calcium store read
ily available when necessary . . .
supplies are deficient."
All this may be a little too
technical for ordinary folk. For
that matter it is apparently dif
ficult for many physicians and
dentists to understand, especial
ly those whose practice is based
on 19th century physiology.
But it seems to me Tom, Dick
and Harry ought to know that a
high calcium diet and as much
exposure to sunshine as possible
(to insure the essential vitamin
D) is a must for anyone who
wants to enjoy health, youth,
vite and longevity. And the first
essential of the high calcium diet
is 1V4 pints of milk (three large
