The first in a series of six
community fairs to be held be
fore the annual county 4-H and
FFA lair in August is scheduled
for Saturday at the Edward
Houston residents at Shady
Cove.
Taking part will be members
of all 4-H clubs in the Upper
Rogue area
The Upper Rogue community
fair is scheduled to start at 1
p.m. The program will include
home economics exhibits, live
stock judging, and showman
ship. Purpose of the community
fairs is to give youngsters prac
tice in judging and showman
ship. Other community fairs
are scheduled at Bellview-Val

Senate Democrats demanded a
full explanation from Atty. Gen.
Herbert Brownell Jr., as to why
he directed the top federal crim
inal law enforcement agency to
find out whether Memphis of
ficials really intend to build a
municipal steam power plant.
To Request Appearance
Sen. Estes Kefauver (D-Tenn.)
said he will ask Brownell to ap
pear soon before a Senate Spe
cial monopoly subcommittee for
questioning about "the author
ity, justification and wisdom of
using the FBI to investigate the
intentions" of Memphis officials.
The Memphis plant, in effect,
would be a substitute for the pri
vate Dixon -Yates installation
now being built at West Mem
phis, Ark, to furnish power to
the Tennessee Valley Authority.
This electricity would replace
power supplied the Atomic Ener
gy Commission elsewhere.
Would Cancel Contract
President Eisenhower told a
news conference yesterday he
would be willing to cancel the
controversial Dixon-Yates con
tract if -it is -certain that 4 Mem
phis will build its own plant.

Plans for the home economics
phase of the county 4-H and
FFA fair, scheduled for Aug. 17
through 20 at the county fair
grounds, were made yesterday at
a. meeting of the county fair
home economics committee.
Under the program set up by
the committee, home economics
exhibits will be due at the fair
grounds on Sunday, Aug. 14,
with judging scheduled for
Monday, Aug. 15.
Style review judging will
start at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug.
16, and will last until noon. Also
scheduled for ' Tuesday are a
clothing judging contest, -to
start at 10 a.m., and foods judg
ing, starting at 1 p.m.
The fair will be open to the
public Wednesday through Sat
urday. Special contests and
demonstrations will be held each
day starting at 1 p.m. The style
review and special awards pro
gram will be held Saturday
night. .

Jones, Gold Hill; Mrs. Maxine

Will Study Rates
Ashland A special meeting
of the city council will be held
July 12 to receive a report by
a' council committee on electric
rate changes.
Rate increases for the city
operated electrical system went
into effect last month. The old
rate system provided for "140
different rates" in the business
district, according to City Super
intendent Elmer Biegel. When
it was revised, it was found that
some users were paying up to
100 per cent more than they
had previously, although, the in
crease was 'designed to range
from 5 to IVz per cent for resi
dential users, and 15 to YlVz per
cent for commercial users.
Protests to the rate increase
were made at a council meeting
this .week, and the electrical
committee of -the council, with
B. A. Cope as chairman, will
conduct a study and report next
week. -

The Soviets, in a memorandum
to the foreign ministry, claimed
the program was propaganda
and that certain Iranian officials
were trying to muddle Iranian
Soviet relations at a time when
Russia was trying to be friendly.
