WIDELY PREVALENT BUT
SELDOM DIAGNOSED .
It is contrary to my Hippo-
cratic principles Do Good If
You Can But No Harm, said the
Father of Medicine, in effect to
tell you poor souls the symptoms
of old familiar diseases or dread
ful new diseases. It seems to me
you have enough to worry about
just trying to keep well without
going daft about it.
But after careful consideration
I have decided that it may do
much good and it can t do much
harm to tell you how to diagnose
and treat yourself. I'm the more
inclined to do so because I be
lieve that in most instances the
individual with tetany doesn't
consult a physician about it, un
less just casually when he hap
pens to seek medical attention
for some more obvious illness or
injury.
Essentially the characteristic
symptom of tetany is - muscle
spasm or cramp in foot or leg,
arm or wrist, sometimes in other
places. In mature adults the
cramp occurs usually in the mid
dle of the night and I have Ben
Told it is pretty painful.
From descriptions of tetany
in standard medical textbooks,
old and new, it is evident that
the medical authorities regard
tetany as a disease of infancy.
They're wrong-1 believe. Tetany
is far more prevalent among ma
ture adults wan in infants or
children.- The difference is that
the doctors see the infants with
tetany, but adults are more like
ly to omit reference to it when
or if they do see a doctor.
Reviewing what medical au
thorities have said in their text
books in the past half century
one gets the impression that each
succeeding author copies, with
trilling alterations, what his pre
decessor said about tetany, and
the predecessor likewise drew on
HIS predecessor for material,
Thus it takes much persevering
researcn to trace "established'
medical concepts and discover
whether they are purely fanciful
or perhaps based on inferences
Weather in June
Nearly Normal in
Area, Report Says
Climatic conditions in the
Medford area during June were
about normal, according to a
summary prepared by the Med
ford weather bureau.
The average temperature dur
ing June was 65.2 degrees, or
just .3 of a degree above the
normal temperature for " the
month. Weather bureau officials
noted t that this was brought
about by particularly warm tem
peratures on June 6 through 9
and 18 through 20.
The high temperature during
the month was 101 degrees, on
June 8, while the low was 37
degrees recorded on June 1.
12 Clear Days
The Medford bureau logged
12 clear days in June, compared
with a normal of 13; 13 partly
cloudy days against 8 normal,
and 5 cloudy days compared
with a normal of 9.
Precipitation during the
month was .07 of an inch, or
.90 of an inch below normal. The
month's total fell on one day,
June 28, although traces too
small to measure were noted on
other days. The only rainfall at
Ashland was a trace which fell
on one day.
The 30-day outlook for this
area is for cool and damp
weather. ,

from faulty observation. For ex
ample, malaria from damp night
air (mal means bad, -aria means
air); but maybe we can tell the
truth about this in another gen
eration. One medical authority of yes
teryear said:
"The nature of tetanv is un
known."
In the opinion of the conduc
tor of this column, who, as every
body knows, is no authority
about anything except maybe
shell briars and bowling greens,
the cause of tetany is Ca and D
deficiency; and the prevention,
relief or cure of the trouble, in
infant, growing child or mature
adult, is simply an optimal daily
ration of calcium and vitamin D.
If that isn't quite clear, send
me a stamped, self-addresssed en
