HUMBLE BUNTS PAY OFF IN 6-5
DODGER VICTORY OVER GIANTS
Br CARL LUHDGUIST
United Pztts Sports Writer
Home runs and extra base hits
rattle off Brooklyn bats almost
on an assembly line basis, but
the humble little bunt, sneered
at by sluggers, is as big a factor
in the Dodger pennant runaway
as any other.
In fact it would hardly be
amiss to say that the Dodgers
are bunting their way to the
bunting.
In their shining 6-5 victory
over the Giants in 11 innings
Thursday, four bunts, each deft
ly delivered on the first pitch,
meant more than a two-run
homer by Willie Mays which
looked as if it would win the
game for the Giants in the 10th.
On each occasion the Dodgers
were desperate facing sudden
death defeat. In the last of the
ninth, trailing 3-2, after Sandy
Amoros and Gil Hodges singled,
Carl Furillo, who is not noted
for bis bunting ability, laid down
sacrifice on the first pitch.-
Dixie Howell, rushed into the
lineup for the first time this
year because both Roy Campa
nella and Rube Walker were
hurt, followed with a sacrifice
fly that tied it up at 3-3.
Finessed Into a Tie
After Al Dark singled and
Mays hit his 20th homer and his
third of the series to put New
York in front, 5-3, in the 10th,
the Dodgers again finessed them
selves into a tie. Jim Gilliam led
off with a bunt single which
hog-tied the Giant infield. Duke
Snider tripled him home and
Jackie Robinson slapped down
a perfect squeeze to the first
base side to tie it at 5-5.
The winning rally was achiev
ed in the 11th 'when Ramon
Monzant, sixth Giant pitcher,
walked Furillo to rotten the
water. Howell came through
again with -a sacrifice bunt that
put Furillo on second and with
in easy delivery distance of home
plate on pinch-hitter George
Shuba bounding single through
the middle.
The victory was especially sig
nificant because of the showing
of the Brooklyn bench, Howell
coming through after Walker
was injured in a .collision at
home plate arid Shuba perhaps
saving himself from being sent
to the minors when the Dodgers
bring up talent to replace men
on the injury list. The Brooks
now are 13 games in front of
second place Milwaukee, 13Vi
ahead of the Cubs and 18 to
cinnati. The Giants in fifth, 18
games in arrears, seem hope
lessly out of it.
Braves Regain Second
The Braves regained second
place in the only other National
League game, coming from be
hind to defeat the Cubs, 7-4, with
four runs in the eighth set up
on an error by Randy Jackson,
Joe Adcock hit a two-run homer
for the winning blow. Del Cran
dall also homered for Milwaukee.
Jackson and Harry Chiti hom
ered for the lesers. '
In the American League, De
troit made it three in a row over
Chicago with a 4-3 squeaker and
Washington ended Boston's five
game winning streak 3-2, in the
only games scheduled.
- Ray Boone drove in three De
troit runs with a homer and
a single. Steve Gromek pitched
a seven-hitter for his eighth vic
tory, yielding one damaging
blow, a two run homer by Min
nie Minoso.
Washington called on veteran
Spec Shea to strike out young
Norman Zauchin on four pitches
with the bases loaded in the
ninth and thus save Ted Aber
nathys first big league victory.
Johnny Groth drove in two of

Freak Homer Aids Stars;
Portland Beaten in 12th
By PETER HAYES '
United Press Sports Writer
The Hollywood Stars outlast
ed Sacramento, 11-10, last night
to climb into third place in the
Pacific Coast League, but it took
one of the freakiest home runs
seen in a long time to do it.
With the score tied 10-10,
left fielder Lee Walls stepped
up in the bottom of the eighth
inning and lifted a blooper down
the right field line. The ball
apparently struck the wall and
bounced crazily with first base
man Nippy Jones, second base
man Harry Bright and right
fielder Jake Crawford in frantic
pursuit.
' By the time they had run it
down, Walls had scooted all the
way around the bases to score
what proved to be the winning
run. .
Lead Fades
The Stars had amassed a 7-1
lead after four innings but it
evaporated in the sixth when the
Sacs shelled three pitchers for
seven hits and eight runs in the
biggest single frame against Hol
lywood 'this year.
The heavy-hitting Walls tied
it up with a two-run homer in
the bottom of the sixth, only to
have Richie Myers put the So
lons ahead again in the eighth
with a homer,. Hollywood's Curt
Roberts squared it with a 400
foot smash over the centerfield
wall in the eighth and Walls won
it with, his fluke homer.
The game in Hollywood wasn't
the only wild one last night. Los
Angeles rallied for six runs in
the 12th inning to beat Portland,
11-7, and San Diego shoved over
four in the 11th to down San
Francisco, 7-4. Oakland at Seat
tle was rained out, with a dou
bleheader scheduled tonight.
Bases Loaded Triple
In Portland, Angel catcher
Jim Fanning unloaded a tre
mendous triple with the bases
loaded in the 12th to break a 5-5
dealoek.
The game was - a pitcher's
nightmare, with Los Angeles
banging out 20 hits off three
Beaver hurlers and Portland col
lecting 15 safeties off four Angel
pitchers.
" TJon Elston (7-4) pitched the
last seven innings to gain the
victory. He was in hot water in
Washington's runs with a triple
and squeeze bunt.

Hardtop Races Saturday;
Christie Creates Interest
How quickly will Bob Chris
tie adapt himself to a new type
of racing? Fans will seek the
answer to that question Satur
day night when they attend the
hardtop auto program at the
Jackson County speedway west
of Medford.
Bill Rosell, track manager for
Medford Junior Chamber of
Commerce, sponsor of the hard
top program, reported that in
terest has been building, high
since it was anonunced that
Christie would try his luck in
the battle of battered bugies.
The veteran Grants Pass driv
er, well known in auto jockey
circles, will make his debut in
hardtop competition. He. has
raced just about every type of
automobile.
Christie will try his hand by
skippering M39, the entry of Vic
Surroz Nash. He has driven a
number of years for Surroz.
Last year 'the - Grants Pass

Split series with other teams
give the Medford Cheney Studs
rays of hope this week end for
the trip to Coquille in the South
ern Oregon Baseball League.
The Studs and Loggers have
league brushes on Saturday and
Sunday. They play in a non
counter on Monday. '
Coquille, co-leader with Drain
in the loop, is at least a slight
favorite over the Medford crew
because of a potent line-up. How
ever, the Loggers have managed
only splits with Bend and Ban
don and the Studs have divided
with both of those aggergations.
On the bleaker side in another
comparison. Medford lost twice
to Drain and Coquille has trim
med Drain in a pair.
Other SOL contention this
week take Drain to Bend and
Roseburg to Bandon. Grants
Pass has a bye. Sweeps by Bend
and Medford on Saturday and
Sunday would serve to tighten
up the race and Bend would go
into a percentage loop lead if
the two clubs can come through
Bend currently ranks third and
Medford is tied for fourth with
Grants Pass.
Pitching Staff Full
The Studs should have a wide
choice of pitchers for fhe long
series on the coast since Warren
Noyes will be back with the
crew. Others for Manager Clar

Derald Wooton, Terry Maddox,
Mary Scherpf and Jim Kelly.
