800 for the 12.2 miles, including
the bridge.
Residents in western Clatsop
county have been debating a
choice between this route and
one further east. The latter
would have crossed Youngs river
at the site of the present Coast
highway bridge and continued to
Seaside roughly along the line
of the Lewis Q. Clark river. Bal
dock estimated the latter route
would .cost: $4,613,460 for 11.8
miles.
The engineer said the choice is
"very difficult" but that he rec
ommended it because more peo
ple would be served and that an
nual savings, compared with the
cost of driving the present road,
of $1,380,790 would be returned.
Savings on the other route, he,
estimated, would be $1,159,744 a
year. - ' r, - -
No construction date was set.
The route will start at Smith
Point in Astoria, pass one mile
east of Warrenton and rejoin the
present highway about 3Vt miles
north of Gearhart.
Gives Shorter Trip
The new route will give resi
dents of Warrenton a shorter trip
to Astoria. '
The commission also decided
yesterday afternoon to call bids
next month of a $960,000. inter
change linking SW Harbor drive
in Portland with Market, Clay
and Columbia streets. BaldotSc
said this would eliminate "the
worst traffic bottleneck in Port
land" by making it possible to re
move all traffic lights on Harbor
drive between the Steel bridge
and SW Barbur boulevard.
Baldock said it would fit into
the 20-year improvement plan
for the Portland area which was
In other action theommission:
