From Camp White
By L. J. ' TICK" MALARKEY
New standard beds with box
springs have been installed in
the lower dormitory of Building
207, replacing the 24 folding
metal cots, acquired in an earlier
day. The hard beds are gradual
ly being disposed of in favor of
more modern and comfortable
accomodations for sleeping. Act
ing Domiciliary Officer Ken
Black and Capt. Hugh Martin of
Company 1 had their hands full
in making the switch. As a re
sult the regular Friday inspec
tion was dispensed with.
George Mitchell is now em
ployed as a member clerk in the
administration office. Mitchell
has been a member of Camp
White upon' several occassions
and returned to the station about
six weeks ago. When he was
here before he was employed as
a stencilist on the staff of Domi
news and at the same time
helped out around Special Serv
ices. "Mitch" is one of the young
er veterans.
J. F. O'Brien, is a contact
supervisor from San Francisco,
spent part of last week at Camp
White. After inspecting the of
fice of Veldon J. Diment, con
tact representative here, he spent
some time getting acquainted
with the domiciliary. This was
O'Brien's third trip to Medford.
As he covers 10 states, he sees
many VA installations and he
spoke highly of the continued
improvement at Camp White.
A capacity bus load went to
Prospect to root for the Camp
White baseball club Sunday.
However, the rooting didn't do
much good as the "Whiters"
came home on the short end of
a 15 to 11 score, their first set
back of the season in league play.
Many of those who stayed at
home went out to watch girl
oft ball teams play on the Camp
White diamond. Butte Falls was
the winner against Camp White
team.
"Vitamin" Marry Knox, morn
ing messenger at the admissions
office, is gaining .other distinc
tions in addition to his vitamin
love and his blackberry picking
activities in the fall of the year.
Postmaster Arthur Scarseth de
clares that Harry can make the
finest vegetable salads served
anywhere, and when Art's cook
is absent he turns "Vitamin" lose
in his kitchen to do the job. Re
sults are "out of this world."
For many years Knox was em
ployed by the Portland postof
fice. He was retired several
years ago on a medical disabil
ity and is one of the "old hands"
at Camp White.
Jim O'Connor is packing up
and making preparations to
leave after July 1. He will visit
with his two sons in California
and plans to spend a great deal
of his time with one of them who
now has shore duty with the
Navy at San Diego. O'Connor
has been at Camp White since
1950. It is worth an admission
price to hear Jim and his words
of advice to 8 balls players in
the pool room.
Another brother team here is
Ed Calhoun and his brother Carl.
We had thought that the brothers
Walker Fred and George, had
the sole distinction but the Cal
houns have now come along.
Carl Calhoun arrived in May, Ed
Calhoun works as an assistant
librarian to Dorthea Glass, chief
librarian. Charlie Smith, an-

other member, is also employed
and is a veteran in the library,
having been there for several
years.
Bob Wilhemn has returned to
the station. He had a lot of sur
gery performed while a patient
at Barnes VA hospital ' and is
now beginning to feel pretty
good. Bob entered Barnes from
Shady Cove where he had pur
chased a home after a discharge
two years ago from Camp White.
He has sold his place and will
make his home here for a while
at least. When he was here be
fore he was employed as a mem
ber in the arts and crafts department.
Gene Lower and his camera
are keeping busy. Since Logan
Hughes left here Lower does
most of the "picture taking"
around Camp White. In addition
to this hobby he is hospital
chairman for the local World
War I Barracks and make daily
infirmary calls. Gene tells that a
recent letter from Logan Hughes
who is now in the Walla Walla,
Wash., VA hospital states that he
is a bed patient. Lower is a great
hand to publicize Camp White
and will send out issues by the
dozen of Dominew as well as
clippings from The Medford
Tribune that tell of domiciliary
activities.
Telecasts of major league
baseball which come in every
Saturday morning on two sets,
one ' in the theater and in the
Green Room, are very well at
tended. These games are pretty
nearly as popular as the fights
each Friday evening.
Painting of the nurses', man
agers, and officer quarters has
been completed. It is a pure
white and a big improvement.
Painters are now moving to the
chapel and library and they will
be similarly decorated as well
as the other frame buildings
which house civil service em-,
ployees. It breaks up the
monotony of the brick color
which predominates.

Washington (U.R) Presi

Sen. Styles Bridges' belief that
he'll go for a second term.
Mr. Eisenhower was back' in
the White House today after a
six-day New England trip during
which he kept the country guess

about 1956. But Bridges thought
the Chief Executive was already
