THE CALCIUM IN AN OLD C
ODGER'S BONES
Milk, whole fresh milk, skim
milk, buttermilk, sour milk, Bul
garian milk, acidophilus milk,
evaporated milk, dried powder
ed milk, whichever you prefer,
is the best food source of cal
cium. Any and every kind of cheese
is second only to milk in this
respect.
Not less than 1V4 pints, three
large glassfuls, of milk daily is
the most essential item in the
high calcium health diet.
The trick specialists and
"clinic" racketeers, who almost
outnumber honest doctors today,
are still telling their gullible
customers that "too much" cal
cium is dangerous, as it may
be "deposited" in the bones,
joints, arteries etc. This makes
the poor souls' stop asking fool
ish questions and readily sub
mit to a series of "shots," which
are expensive, of course, even
if they are calcium gluconate
or calcium chloride in solution!
Whatever it is, the poor souls
imagine it must be more power
ful that way.

McNeill, mistress of the $400,
000 mansion occupied by the
Russian delegation to the United
Nations ' last week, said today
they were "simply wonderful"
the way they cleaned up after
them.
"You just can't imagine cleaner
people," exclaimed Mrs. McNeill
after a close, inspection of her
house.

"Except for a few cigarette
burns and a stain or two, they
left the place just as they, found
it. We really didn't know what
to expect, but it just couldn't
have been cleaner."
Mrs. McNeill said, she was es
corted on an inspection tour by
a Russian who remained behind

Weeks in Physiology, by J. Dor
man Steele, Ph. D., a copy of
which a namesake kindly sent
me, I quote:
"The composition of the
bones at maturity is about
one part animal to two parts
mineral matter. In youth it
is nearly half and half, while
in old age the mineral is great
ly in excess ..."
Steele conjured, his notion out
of fancy, for precise chemical
analyses of bone had not yet
been made. Today there can be
no question that the bones of the
aged are easily broken because
the bones become gradually de
mineralized with advancing age.
The demineralization is espe
cially a steady loss of calcium
is due primarily to nutritional
deficiency (malnutrition), espe
cially inadequate intake of cal
cium, that is, less than the
amount one gets in VA pints of
milk three full glasses daily.
And how much calcium does one
get in 1V& pints of milk? Maybe
10 or 12 grains. Not enough for
a growing child, but perhaps
enough to keep a mature adult
from aging prematurely.
