Chicago OI.R) Most folks
would think grey-haired Errol
Young has it made. He lives on
a yacht and he can walk to work
in about one minute.
Young's diesel-powered boat
is moored in the Chicago River
near the Merchandise Mart
Building, right alongside the
parking lot where he's worked
for the last 16 years.
"But I've got my problems,
too," he said. "People like you,
for instance. Curiosity seekers.
"They come around and ask
the same old questions, all the
time." '
Young's wife, Lillian, works
for the telephone company,
about three blocks away.
Keeping house aboard a boat
tied up almost in the shadow of
downtown skyscrapers has its
drawbacks, she said.
"For one thing, it gets pretty
dusty and grimy downtown
here. And stormy weather can
be bad, too."
Disadvantages
When the boat rocks, some
times the dishes slide off the
shelves.
"You should try to drink a
cup of coffee some night when
the fishing boats are. coming in,
Young said. We get caught in
the wake and bob around like
a cork."
The Youngs bought their boat
about 10 years ago. It's plenty
roomy for the two of them, and
it's well equipped for house
keeping.
It's 77 feet long and has a 26-
foot beam, and it's powered by
two 120-horsepower diesels.
Young figures living aboard
the boat costs him at least $75 a
month. For one thing, he has to
pay a water tax. And in a couple
of weeks he'll have to put the
boat in drydock.
"It's going to cost me about
$6,000 to get her shipshape," he
said. "That's not a regular item,
but you've got to figure it in your
living expenses."
Young opined he has "the same
household problems anybody else
has."
"You've got your grass to cut,"
he said. "I've got my weeds;
down there on the bank.
"But I guess I can chirp a

lhe sixtn wedding anniver
sary is the "iron wedding." What
can you give for an "iron" wed
ding present? You might give
the husband a few golf clubs.
But how about his loving wife?
I am engaged in trying to revise
the wedding anniversary situa
tion. I suggest the sixth wedding
anniversary be made the "mink
wedding." On that occasion all
the friends of the young matron
should join in contributing to
buy her a mink coat.
Asking
Queries from clients. Q. I was
at the Kentucky Derby and saw
Willie Shoemaker ride the win
ner. I think Willie is so cute. Is
he married? A. Willie, who
would rather be called Bill, has
been married six years to an
extremely charming blonde
named Virginia. They were mar
ried when Virginia was 15 and
Bill 18. Incidentally, Virginia is
five inches taller than her cele
brated spouse. He. is 4 feet 11.
She is 5 feet 4. Q. Is there in all
New York City a restaurant
where tipping is prohibited? A.
Yes, sir. That is the policy of
a coffee shop on Madison Ave
nue near Forty-third Street. The
policy is strickly followed. Wait
resses refuse any tips offered.
Place seems to be a success.
Waitresses are evidentaly paid
good wages.
Holiday Pay
, Ever hear of supermarket em
ployees being paid $46 .a-dayd
Tnats what some salesmen in
some supermarkets in California
are paid for working on holidays
such as Memorial Day, Fourth of
July, etc. This is due to overtime
plus special pay arrangements.
Sidelights
Ever been caught in a revolv
ing door? Kate Smith, the gene
rously proportioned chanteuse,
was once stuck in a revolving
door for eleven .hours! . . . The
song I most enjoyed listening to
John McCormack sing was "I
hear you calling me" ... A wo
man who suffers from gout is a
rarity. That is a male ailment.
Is frequently called "the mys
tery disease." Medical men don't
know the cause of it Therefore
they cannot prescribe a cure.
Among The Married
Number of runaway wives
continues to increase. Why do
wives leave home? Love rarely
has anything to do with it. That
is, they do not elope with hand
some strangers. Nor because
they are bored with married life.
The ' major reason for wives
leaving home is mother-in-law
trouble. Or, so say lawyers, po
lice officials and specialists in
searching for missing persons.
Asides
Women do wear extremenly
curious looking hats but don't
forget that immortal ditty titled
"Where Did You Get That Hat?"
was written about a man's hat . .
The great Parisian tonsorial ex
pert, Monsieur Georges Hardy,
uses only a razor in giving a
man a haircut. Monsieur Hardy
claims that is the only way to
give a man a truly artistic hair
cut. '
Briefly

little. I've got the transportation
problem licked. But living next
door to your job like this is a
headache, sometimes. -
"Most people who park their
cars here know I live on the
boat. ' And I'd like to have a
nickle every time some customer
wakes me up at 2 o'clock in the
morning, especially in the win
ter, because he can't get his
car started."
One nice thing about it is va
cation time. When he gets the
boat out of drydock Young plans
to stock up on provisions, cast
off the lines and .sail out into
Lake Michigan..
"Maybe I'll head up the lake
to. Milwaukee and get some good
beer," he said. "Or maybe I'll
cross over to Benton arbor or
Muskegon.
"It'll be kind of nice."
