Northern Dockworkers
Oppose Return To Work

300 striking dockworkers from
Britain's northern ports "in
vaded" the London waterfront
today to halt a back to work
movement by local longshore
men. '
Hundreds of policemen lined
up shoulder to shoulder to pre
vent clashes between the provin
cial strikers and the London
dockmen, all members of the
same union.
The "invasion" was touched
off by the decision of the Lon
don workers to end a five-week
strike and return to work today
while northern port members
were voting to stay out.
First reports said that only
several hundred men returned
to work of the nearly 10,000 that
walked out five weeks ago in
sympathy with their fellow
workers in the northern ports.
