FALSE though the be to me and
love.
I'll ne'er pursue revenge;
For still the charmer I approve
Though I deplore her change.
In hours of bliss we oft have met;
They could not always last;
And though the present I regret
I'm grateful for the post.
William Consreve.
How much does the weight
of a mother affect that of her
child at birth? Dr. Effie Lobdell
of Chicago once reported she had
officiated at a blessed event in
which the mother weighed 745
pounds and the father 304. The
newly born infant weighed nine
pounds.
Tippers
Waitress ' of long experience
says the most generous tippers
in the order named are: 1 Mo
tion picture directors; 2 race
horse owners and trainers; 3
newspapermen. As for the worst
tippers she says they are: 1
Baseball players; 2 barbers; 3
-women.
Asking
Queries from clients. Q Was
1900 a leap year? A No, sir . . .
Q What are said to be the ideal
measurements for a dress model?
A Bust, 35; weist, 23; and hips,
35. Height, 5 feet 8. Weight 120.
Should also have small hands,
long legs . . . Q What's the
"youngest mother" record for
the United States? A Could not
say definitely. However, not so
many years ago a 10 year old
girl became a mother in Cali
fornia. To be exact, she was ten
years and nine months old.
Aside
A recording of "Auf Wieder
gehn" by Vera Lynn is said to
have sold about three million
copies and netted Vera royalties
amounting to nearly $100,000
It is not beyond the range of
probability that the Brooklyn
Dodgers baseball franchise will
be sold to Los Angeles.

Hon and Woman
"A pretty foot is one of the
greatest gifts of nature," said
Goethe. No doubt he was right.
I never have been much of an
observer of women's feet. How
ever, I can appreciate the beauty
of a woman's hand. I believe the
shape of a woman's hand can be
an indication of her character.
That is, as to whether she is in
telligent, artistic, well bred and
has good taste.
Almost' Confidential
Am asked how high above the
East River is the place on the
Brooklyn Bridge from which
Steve Brodie is alleged to have
jumped. Answer is 135 feet . . .
The best rendition of a comic
song I ever heard was Vesta
Victoria singing "Waiting at the
Church." Second best, Fannie
Brice singing "Sadie Salome Go
Home." Third, Lisa Kirk singing
"Always True to You in My
Fashion."
Picturesque
In the yesteryear in Japan
only bachelorettes wore red
petticoats. That was one of the
ways a young .woman made it
known she was single. Quite a
picturesque idea. Wonder how it
would work out in this country.
Anyway, a group of bachelor
ettes might get together and form
an organization known as "The
Red Petticoat Club." They could
wear red petticoats on the oc
casion of their annual dance.

Committee Okays
U.S. Debt Ceiling
BY UNITED PRESS
The House Ways and Means
Committee has voted for. a
federal debt ceiling which Treas
ury Secretary George M.
Humphrey said will make it im
possible to cut taxes or boost
spending in the next 12 months.
The committee unanimously
approved an administration re
quest that the ceiling, now tem
porarily set at $281,000,000,000,
be continued for another year.
The debtnowispushing$275,000,
000,000, the so-called permanent
level to which the ceiling is
scheduled to drop at midnight
Thursday.
Humphrey agreed to ask ex
tension of the temporary limit
because he figured he couldn't
get congressional approval of a
higher figure for either the tem
porary or permanent lid.
But he said it would "leave
absolutely no room" in the next
year for either tax cuts or spend
ing hikes.

SILVER DOLLARS
Washington Most of the sil
ver dollars now in circulation
were minted between 1921 and
1927. The minting of silver dol
lars was suspended in 1935, mak
ing the coins something of a curiosity.
