Personal Health Service
By WILLIAM BRADY, M.D.
Readers should address inquiries to:
Dr. William Brady
263 EI Camino, Beverly Hills, Calif.
WHO KNOWS WHAT
ALLERGY MEANS?
When the doctor prescribed a
basic health, corrective, protec
tive, reducing diet (as patterned
on p. 43 of Tha 7 Keys to Vita
for which send 25c and stamped
self-addressed envelope) for a
patient with spurious sinusitis,
the patient squawked that he
couldn't take a quart of milk a
day. My stars, he couldn't take
milk at all he was allergic to
milk.
One might as reasonably pur
port to be allergic to outdoor
air, tap water or gravy.
Doctors and folks have car
ried the notion of allergic sensi
tivity far beyond reason. Allergy
has become a byword in the glib
chatter of the half-informed. It's
as useful as ulcers for smart-cracks.
For all I know, it may well be
that some persons do acquire a
peculiar sensitivity to one or
another component of milk, per
sons who for some reason, have
lived for long periods without
milk or with too little milk in
their diet or with only "pro
cessed" milk or milk products.
In the pamphlet on Allergy
(ask for it in writing and inclose
stamped, self-addressed envel
ope) I suggest potassium chloride
and vitamin C for relief of the
spell and calcium feeding to
prevent or combat development
of allergic sensitivity. So it is all
right to use the KC1 and C as
medicine for relief of distress or
as a paliative remedy. The Ca
and D, however, is nutritional,
not medicinal, and in order to
get the full benefit of it, one
must eat the daily ration
throughout the season or
throughout the year.
Incidentally, the hay fever
season is opening, and hay fever
is allergy to one or another kind
of pollen, and if you decide to
go on a high calcium diet with
Ca and D supplementation, you
had better start on it right now
four glasses of milk every
day. Inclose an additional ten
cents when you write for any of
the foregoing pamphlets, for the
one on Hay Fever. And still
another ten cents if you want
also the pamphlet on Asthma,
for that's an allergic condition
too. Then there's Eczema that's
allergic, too the pamphlet will
set you back another dime.
These health pamphlets should
all be free, not just one to a
reader with a charge for addi
tional pamphlets the reader
wants. But the cost of printing
and distributing exceeds the
stipend of the grasping old
charlatan who conducts this col
ume, so the only alternative is
to charge for some of the pamph
lets or bid you all good-bye and
devote myself wholly to the
bowling green 313 days a year
from now on. .
Say, that's a pleasant pros
pect! The many big interests
that do not like me very well.
my teachings much less, might
proffer me an appointment as
consultant or something, which
position would provide a salary,
bonus or pension and the oppor
tunity to join the loafers on the
bowling green '313 days in the
year for such an Elysium
would I quit trying to teach you
poor souls how to keep well!
Don't just sit there tell me,
stupid, what do you think?
Would I?
