Television Noses Into Homes
For New Neighborly Programs
1 Wedntsday, June 22. 19SS '
By ELIZABETH TOOMEY
United Preit Correspondent
Portland, Ore. (U.R) Tele
vision programs have taken to
moving around neighborly fash
ion in family living rooms far
from New York City.
Any town might be the sud
den object of this new TV cur
iosity. A woman may find herself
watching in dumb amazement
as technicians string miles of
cables through the house, roll up
the rugs, move furniture and
wheel in television cameras for
a "casual" visit viewed by a na
tionwide television audience.
The latest expedition to strike
out from the soundproofed TV
studios in Manhattan arrived
here this week. Eighteen people,
including star Arlene Francis,
made the cross-country trip to
put on the NBC daytime show
here and in Seattle for five days.
New Idea
"This will make five cities we
have visited on one-week tours,
and there will be many more,"
August C. Spectorsky, produc
tion supervisor, said. "It is not
the old idea of having network
talent put on a show in another
location. We want to show our
audience how other families
live."
An unexpected knock on the
door may be the first hint a
housewife has that her home is
being surveyed for its television
possibilities. Advance scouts for
the Home Show pick interest
ing neighborhoods weeks in ad
vance, then stroll around look
ing for a house that attracts
them.
"My neighbors don't know
whether to envy or pity me,"
said Mrs. Christian Kisky, sur
veying the front yard of her
home.
Mrs. Kisky and her husband,
a Portland dentist, were one of
two families visited here by the
Home Show cameras and Miss
Francis.
The yard was criss-crossed
with cables which also ran
through the front door and out
the back door. Four cameras, a
loudspeaker, two policemen, a
remote TV truck housing the
monitor screens usually in a
studio room and 24 people con
nected with the show, some who
were recruited locally, were
scattered in and around the
house.
"This has been going on for
10 days," Mrs. Kisky sighed. "Its
very interesting, but I can't get
any housework done."
Small towns are next on this
widespread invasion of TV pro
grams. Invitations come in reg
ularly from people who would
like to have their town or their
family shown on TV, Spectorsky
said.
The neighborly visits may ev
en go international. Miss Francis
has applied for a visa to Russia.
"Sure, we'd want to visit
some homes there," she said.
"Women are interested in these
things, you know. And we aim
to please."
