By ELIZABETH HURLOCK. PH.D.
I stand up to him. which I
don't want to do?"
(A) Why not develop a sense
of humor about the matter, as
your teacher seems to have done?
I don't think
he is taking
your childish
misbehavior as
s e r i ously as
you are. It
sounds to me
as if he were
merely trying
to tease you.
Tt is alwavs
Dr. Hexlock difficult to live
down the past, as you have dis
covered. However, most boys
and girls in their early teens
try to break every rule every
chance they get, and most teach
ers of young teenagers learn to
expect it. You may have been
more troublesome than most of
your classmates, which would
account for your teacher's re
membering your misbehaviour
over four years.
The best way to cope with
this problem is to treat your
childish pranks as a joke. When
he talks about how trying you
were, why not laugh and say,
"'I certainly was a brat, wasn't
I?" Or, "How did you put up
with me for a year? I should
have thought you would have
wanted to choke me."
The more mature you are in
your behavior now, the more
quickly your teachers and other
people will forget about the mis
behavior of the past. When they
do remember it, they will have
a different person in mind from
what your are today. ,
