Hammarskjold endoriia
the United Nations as a bod?
which can solve the problem ot
reconciling strong national feel
ing with international coopera
tion for peace.
Citisea Of World V
"Everybody today, with part
of his being, belongs to on
country, with Its specific tradt
tions and problems, while with
another part he has become a '
citizen of a world which no
longer permits national lsola
tion," he said.
"Seen in this light, there
could not be any conflict be
tween nationalism and interna
tionalism, between the nation
and the world .. ."
But, Hammarskjold said, even
modest attempts at regional inte
gration have encountered diffi
culties "because the peoples
want to know in whose hands
they put their fate."
"Nationalism which reflects
determination, to shape one's '
own fate and to take responsi
bility for it" is an asset, he said.
But he labelled it a liability
when nationalism "blinds eur
eyes to the necessity of that de
gree of international organize
tion which has become neces
sary to national life."
FtesH Thinking On Problems
" He declared that the 10th tfjlt
annivesary session in San Fran '
cisco this week will be "an occa
sion for fresh thinking about the
problems of our world."
. "The United Nations," he said,
"is an expression of our will to
find a synthesis between the na
tion and the world. Whatever
may be the past shortcomings in
world organization, it give
sense and direction to the ef
forts of all men who are striving
towards a better world.
