As We Live
Kindness Is Shown
To Those Who Show It
Everything in this life has its
price tag. It may not be in terms
of dollars and cents but in terms
of effort, personal sacrifices, or
sacrifice of
pride. Before
paying the
price, every
thing should
be evaluated
to see if it is
worth it.
Kindness
and frieridli-
tK"fciia ness, like
Dr. Herlock everything
else, will not just drop in a per
son's lap. Anyone who . wants
the friendship of others must pay
the price that such friendship
requires.
The same is true of kindness.
You cannot expect a person to
be kind to you unless you are
kind in return. When you want
others to do things for you, to
be thoughtful and interested in
you, and to be willing to help
you out in any emergency, you
must pay the price for this kind
ness. And it may be high.
Because so few people are ap
preciative of the kindness of
others and take it for granted
without giving anything in re
turn, many people, as they go
through life, begin to wonder if
it is worth their while to be kind
to others. As a result, they
often learn to be selfish and self
centered. .
In addition, they become some
what suspicious of anyone who
wants them to do things or go
out of their way to help. Having
discovered in the past that their
efforts were not appreciated, they
have decided not to put them
selves in a similar position in the
future.
Must Convince People
As a result, you must con
vince most people that you are
the exception to the rule and
demonstrate through your own
acts that you are willing to go
half-way or even more if they
will do the same. You cannot
sit back and wait for them to
take the initiative.
Nor can you expect them to be

LETTERS FROM READERS
Coldness: "Are some people
born with little feeling? I
have known some people who
are so cold and unresponsive
that you never feel you can
get close lo them."
(A) While it is true that peo
ple do differ in the degree of
their emotionality just as they
differ in physical and mental
make-up, few are born cold and
unresponsive. They have been
made that way by the type of
treatment they have received.
Their coldness is a form of de
fense against being hurt. They
do not want people to come close
to them nor do they want to feel
too fond of people because they
are afraid they will be hurt
again as they were in the past.
If they can avoid becoming emo
tionally involved, they guaran
tee themselves that they will not
be disappointed or disillusioned.
Tattle-Tale: "I know lots of
children like to tattle about
others and get them, into
trouble. But when a person
reaches adult years, wouldn't
you think she would be too old
for such childishness?"
(A) You would expect all peo
ple to put away childish things
and grow up, but that does not
mean that they will do so. In
fact, if they learn as children that
certain forms of behavior
"work" in the sense that they
bring them satisfaction and some
success, they are likely to con-'
tinue to use them throughout
their lives.
Fun Is Individual: "I never
can persuade my husband to
go out and have fun with
people. He likes to sit around
and read, or tinker with the
car."
(A) What your husband is do
ing is doubtless "fun" for him
or he would not do it. After
being with people all day where
he works, he doubtless finds it
more relaxing and pleasanter to
be at home quietly with his fam
ily, doing what he enjoys doing.
Don't discourage his having fun
in his own way.
