Portland, Ore. Seventh-
day Adventist church members
in Oregon, Idaho, Washington.
Montana, and Alaska last year
completed a total of more than
424,440. man hours in an effort
to make life easier for less for
tunate people, according to a
report released here this week
by C. S. Joyce, director of the
church's laymen activities in the
North Pacific Union Conference.
Give Clothing -
Working largely through the
church's laymen's welfare orgs-
nization in each church, the Dor
cas Welfare society, and through
personal efforts, members gave
319,935 articles of clothing to
the needy, Mr. Joyce said.
More than 51,488 food baskets
were given out, bringing the to
tal number of persons helped to
155,675.. Treatments given with
out charge in private homes or
at Adventist Health and Wel
fare centers totaled 19,320.
Forty Centers
There are more than 40 such
centers operating in the North
west alone, the Adventist wel
fare director explained. Some
are designated simply as Wel
fare center. When the term
"Health" appears in the title, the
center has arranged for the serv
ices of a qualified physician,
dentist, or nurse to be available
to the public at stated hours
without charge.
The church's Home Missionary
department estimates that the to
tal cash value of welfare work
done in the Northwest comes to
$1,088,126. The world figure
reaches $14,060,632. Of this
amount $75,183.88 was actual
cash contributed by church mem
bers. Mr. Joyce pointed out that
this report represents a continu
ing program of assistance to the
needy without regard for race,
creed, or nationality.
