I Beg to Harp on Rheumatis
A sovereign remedy for rheu
matiz chronic joint disability 1
back in the days when medicine I
was a profession, before the busi
nessmen discovered how much
more they could make out of
"arthritis," was plain cod liver
oil. Not just a dainty teaspoon
ful after meals for a week or
two, but a teaspoon twice daily,
or two tablespoons (a fluid
ounce) every day the year
around with perhaps a month
off each summer, for good be
havior. Among other nutritional ele
ments in cod liver oil, the pa
tient who downed his beaker of
oil like a little man a little
woman would take it without
any fuss and ask "Who's for pa
chisi?" got what recognized nu
trition authorities consider the
optimal daily requirement of
vitamin D, a little more 'than I
recommend for one with the
rheumatiz; and also an optimal
daily ration of iodine, a little
more than I recommend for
everybody.
That wasn't all. The individual
with chronic joint disability
(physical degenration, not "arth
ritis") got about 18,000 units of
vitamin A in the cod liver oil,
and that, too, is an optimal daily
ration, that is to say, the amount
calculated to maintain the most
healthful nutritional condition.
Now it is my belief and re
member I'm no authority about
anything that the cod liver oil
treatment was as helpful as any
other treatment for the rheu
matiz (not "arthritis") then or
now.
- To the best of our present
knowledge, the remedial effects
of cod liver oil are entirely at
tributable to the vitamin A, vita
min D and iodine the oil con-

Today any or all of these

tually tasteless form, small tab

Provitamin A (carotene) is so
abundantly available in fruits
and vegetables and natural vita
min A in milk, cream, butter,
cheese, egg yolk, liver, sardines,
etc. that clear evidence of A de
ficiency is rare in America, ex
cept, perhaps, moderate "night
blindness" (poor dark adapta
tion) and xeroderma (abnormal
dryness of the skin). These mani
festations of A deficiency seem
unrelated to rheumatism.
But, as you will find explain-;
ed in detail in, the pamphlet
Calcium., and Rheumatis (for
which send stamped, self - ad

great deal of scientific, empiri
cal, clinical, and practical evi
dence r that the modern ultra
refined American diet does not
supply adequate daily amounts
of certain essentials to maintain
good nutrition, notably these:
(1) vitamin B, (2) iodine, (3)
sunshine vitamin D, and (4)
calcium.
It is my belief, theory, opin
ion, notion, whatever you please
to call it, that in most instances
the rheumatiz (not arthritis) is
physical degeneration of joint
tissues due to these nutritional
deficiencies.

Appropriation Bill
For Hillsboro Slated
Washington (U.R) An
$8,000,000 appropriation bill for
the proposed Hillsboro, Ore.,
naval air reserve training sta
tion is scheduled to go before
a Senate committee next week
according to Navy sources.
The House has already ap
proved the appropriation and
passage in the Senate would
clear the way for immediate con
struction. Harold D. Say, Wash
ington manager of the Portland
Chamber of Commerce, said the
station would bring an estimated
annual payroll of $2,000,000 to
Hillsboro.
Testimony before a ' House
committee said the station would
have permanent personnel of 34
officers and 330 enlisted men,
in addition to 75 civilians.
