U-i'ed Fres-j Cclsr.ce Editor
New York f'J.R'--Science re
grets to cun'c;s it doesn't fuliy
understand the love lives of fire
flies. "This time of year, when
millions of ti'icm are blinking
over every countryside, science
hopes something startling and
mystery-solving will turn up.
It's the .more humiliating be
cause on first blush fire fly love
seems so simple. The boys mere
ly fly around, turning their
lights on and off to announce
they're available. The girls stay
on the ground. When they turn
their lights on and then off, it
means, come hither. The boys
do.
But now corne the complica
tions. There are more than 60
kinds of fire flies. Their ranges
overlap. When you keep in mind
that each boy is signaling for his
kind of girl, and each girl in
vites her kind of boy and none
other, you will see fire fly love
is anything but simple.
Diplomacy Rapped
For Postwar Loss
Of China To Reds
Portland (U.R) Sen. Gordon
Allott (R-Colo.) said last night if
U. S. diplomacy in postwar
China "had been properly
guided, the Communists could
never have taken control and
would not be in control today."
He said the Eisenhower ad
ministration "inherited a bad
and very complex and confused
situation in the Far East" but
"our recent foreign policy has
been effective."
Courage Not Enough
Allott told the Northwest In
stitute of International Relations
that the forthcoming "Big Four"
talks in Geneva "could conceiv
ably test the direction of Soviet
intention."
But, he said, "wisdom and
courage on our part are not
enough to guarantee that war
will not come. Something else is
needed to prevent war sober
realization by the antagonist
that war would not serve his
interests."
Allott said that under Presi
dent Eisenhower's foreign
policy, "The Western Hemis
where is today more unified
than ever before in history" and
and "Western Europe enjoys and
improves a unity heretofore re
guarded as unattainable."
Alliances Formed
In the Middle East, he said,
"without exception the nations
have rejected Communism" and
'"certain ones have formed al
liances and have accepted part
nership with the West." .
Allott said "the Far East is an
area of great hazard, but the
lines have been drawn." He said,
"'we and our partners have unit
ed and are now holding the Com
munist host in check. With cour
age and wisdom we may keep
him in check."

Now, with strenuous summer vacation play and activities ahead,
youngsters need added pep and energy. It is the timo to drink

it takes" to build hardiness and health. Jorgensen's ALL JERSEY

ordinary milk - has MORE VITAMINS above the cream line.

Never Mixed Up
Yet. according to the Ameri
can Museum of Natural History,
none of the boys and girls of one
kind ever seem to get mixed up
with boys and girls of any of
the other kinds. Science finally
decided that each kind of fire
fly must have a sense of its own
"fire" color and built-in auto
matic timers.
It was found that the color of
the light of one kind of fire fly
is a shade different than the light
of another kind. And the length
of time between flashes of light
differs among the various kind.
. That made it seem clear that
the boy fire fly bobbing and
weaving over a pasture gave off
a light of precisely the correct
color which was spaced precisely
right to stimulate this kind of
girl to flash the come hither
signal. But the light and spacing
meant nothing to other kinds of
girl fire flies.
This also meant, of course,
that her come hither signal had
to be of the right color and tim
ing to attract her kind of boy
but no other kind because other
wise shed signal down too many
boys out of the night sky or inone
atalL'
So there seemed to be no fur
ther question until scientists be
gan to notice that the hotter the
night, the less time there was
between the flashes of light. That
was most disconcerting for sev
eral reasons.
Endless Confusion
Unless all kinds of fire flies
were affected to precisely the
same degree by changes in tem
perature, a temperature change
would cause endless confusion
in any pasture where more than
one kind of fire flies happened
to be about. If temperature
change affected the various kinds
unevenly, a temperature change
could bring the flash timing of
one kind into exact parallel with
the flash timing of another kind.
Then what?
That question is under scien
tific investigation. Timing the
flashes of more than 60 kinds
of fire flies on warm nights, hot
nights, and hotter nights is a
large chore. And there is another
Firelighters Mop Up
Klamath Forest Fires
Yreka, Calif. (U.R) Fed
eral and state firefighters have
mopped up the last of some 15
lightning-started fires which
have burned in the Klamath na
tional forest near the California-
Oregon border for the past five
days., y-.:. .
Fire dispatcher Lee Morford
said the fires, last of some 122
blazes caused by electrical
storms, were brought under con
trol with the aid of a rain show
er. In the same period that 33,417
Americans were killed in the
Korean campaign, 650,000 Amer
icans died of cancer.
m MflDHBIE
Confusion
question: If time intervals be
tween flashes varies according
to temperature, then both boys I
and girls would have to make j
allowances for temperature.
And that would border on a ;
thought process. Science can !
demonstrate beyond quibble that
fire flies don't think, and so
even the suggestion of a thought
process is dangerously unscien
tific. There must be some auto
matic precess involved like a
reflex which hasn't yet been
discovered.
Hill Sees Free
Vaccine Program
For All Children
i Washington (U.R) Chair
man Lister Hill (D-Ala.), today
predicted the Senate Labor com
mittee would approve a Demo
cratic proposal to provide free
polio vaccine for all the nation's
children.
Democrats on the committee
have offered the proposal as a
substitute for an administra
tion bill authorizing the federal
government to give $35,000,000
in grants to help states provide
the vaccine.
Hearings Concluded
The labor committee Wednes
day ended two days of often
sharply partisan hearings on thei
two proposals. The hearings in
dicated there would be a parti
san split on the two bills with
the Democratic majority win
ning out with their proposal.
Hill said he expected to call
the committee into executive
session within the next few days
for a showdown vote on the two
proposals. He said he believes
the Democratic bill, of which he
is a co-sponsor, will be reported
out favorably by the committee.
Hill at the same time took a
jab at the administration, and
in particular at Mrs. Oveta Culp
Hobby, secretary of health, edu
cation and welfare.
"The Democratic bill is so
good," he said, "that Mrs. Hob
by is trying to get in the image
of it."
Free-To-Needy Plan
Hill referred to the fact that
the administration originally had
proposed that the federal gov
ernment give $28,000,000 to the
states to provide free vaccine
for any child whose parents
could not afford it. In the face
of Democratic criticism, Mrs.
Hobby earlier this week amend
ed the administration proposal
to provide assistance to the
states to give vaccine to all chil
dren needy or not.
At the closing hearing, the
Democratic proposal was oppos
ed as "unnecessary" and "de
structive" by the American Med
ical association. The AMA also
opposed the administration pro
posal unless it was restricted to
providing free vaccine for needy
children.

New, Granular HI-PRESS
Saves You Time and
Here's Why: New HI-PRESS peat moss is entirely dif
erent! It's concentrated and granulated but expands many
times when wetted. This means that a 70 lb. bag of HI-PRESS
covers the same area as a big, awkward bale of regular peat
moss. Thus, HI-PRESS helps take the "lift" out of "life";
takes up less valuable storage space. And most important,
HI-PRESS can be applied with a fertilizer spreader or by
hand . . . Concentrated, granular HI-PRESS pours like sand.
AND THAT'S NOT ALL!
HI-PRESS Stays Put .
Because it's virtually dust-free and because it may be applied
with a spreader close-to the ground, HI-PRESS stays out of
your eyes; doesn't ruin fresh paint
HI-PRESS isn't carted away with your grass clippings.
There's less waste with HI-PRESS. Compressed granules of
HI-PRESS don't blow away; instead settle down among the
roots. And when used as a lawn dressing HI-PRESS isn't
picked up by your rake or mower basket
HI-PRESS comes in the size that fits your need.
Available in 5, 20, 50 and 70 lb. packages. At all leading
'nursery and garden supply stores.,
