HOW'S YOUR SACRO-ILIAC?
Nearly 50 years ago Dr. Joel
Goldthwait published the first
description of strain of the sac-ro-iliac
joint. (JAMA, 8-31-'07).
Until Dr. Goldthwait illuminated
the subject the medical profes
sion had regarded the joint or
junction between the sacrum or
keystone at the base of the spine
and the ilium or flank of the
hip bone on either side as fixed
and immovable and therefore not
subject to strain, sprain, relaxa

Jaycees Form Group
For Public Speaking
The Medford Junior Chamber
of Commerce has formed a new
committee on leadership train
ing called The Gavel Club. While
new to the Medford Jaycees, the
group is an , integral part of
many Jaycee clubs throughout
the U.S. According to Monte
Stram, committee chairman, it
will give members experience
in "thinking on their feet."
After The Gavel Club mem
bers have gained experience in
public speaking, it is expected
that a speakers bureau will be
formed. This bureau would
make speakers available to as
sist civic organizations durine
special projects of-Dublic inter
est and benefit.
The first regular meetinr of
the club will be held at 7:30
p.nv. today in the law offices of
Robert Boyer. According to ad
vance registration, a large turn
out is expected. All Javcee mem
bers and interested friends are
invited to attend.

Dr. Goldthwait said strain or
relaxation of the sacro-iliac
junction or joint caused pain at
the seat of trouble or pain re
ferred down the leg, even to the
foot. This pain is worse at night
or whenever the patient is re
cumbent, but is relieved by up
right posture. Among other re
medial measures he suggested
was this:
"Sometimes the ilium has
become slightly displaced on
the sacrum a slipping for
ward of the sacrum" or slip
ping backward of the ilium,
one might say. "In such cases
replacement must be tried by
hyperextension of the spine.
The patient lies with chest and
shoulders on one table, thighs
and legs on another, face
downward, thus allowing the
body to hang, tending to pull
the sacrum forward on the
ilium."

pelvic belt or strapping with ad

joint in corrected position is then
applied.
Although Dr. Goldthwait did
not mention it, and few ortheo
pedic surgeons today do, it
seems to me that Goldthwait had
the osteopaths in mind when he
spoke of "slipping". for they
were diagnosing and treating
"slipped innominate" (the in
noninate is the haunch, pelvic
or hip bone) before even Goldth
wait recognized tne trouble.
It is characteristic of the spirit
of medicine that the medical
authorities discussing sacro-iliac
sprain, strain, relaxation or sub
luxation today not only pretend
they never heard of Goldthwait
but they reveal their petty pre
judice in such language as this:

"Unless the medical profes

our bodies are built on mechan

things that we have groped in
the dark about are due to a me

that banality reproved the pro
