National Debt May
Top Properly Value
New York (U.R) The nation
al debt may, by the end of fiscal
-1956, be greater than the assess
ed value of all property in the
nation, the Tax Foundation said
today.
The current issue of the foun
dation's publication, "Tax Out
look," says that the national
debt is slated to reach 276 bil
ipn dollars by the end of fiscal
1956 while the latest assessed
valuation for tax purposes of all
the nation's property is given at
240 billion dollars.
The non-profit research group
reports that in 31 states the
"share" of the national debt ex
ceeds the assessed valuation of
taxable property. The founda
tion used its own formula for
allocating the federal debt
among the 48 states.

Stevenson Says
Chances Necessary
Af Big 4 Meeting
Oberlin, Ohio-rOJ.R) Adlai E.
Stevenson said today the United
States must be willing to com
promise and to "take some rea
sonable chances" at the Big Four
meeting at the summit."
The 1952 Democratic presi
dential candidate warned Amer
icans against tieing President
Eisenhower's hands at the forth
coming conference by insisting
on an inflexible, uncompromis
ing stand.
"Trading used to be consider
ed a Yankee talent and I think
it still is even by Republicans!
if we don't put our traders in
a strait jacket and scare them
stiff in advance," he said.
Calls for New Peace Efforts
Stevenson called for new ef
forts to achieve peace in a speech
prepared for delivery at the
Oberlin College commencement
exercises, where he also received
an honorary degree.
The Democratic leader also
made a few implied digs at the
Republicans, attacking the "ad
vertising approach" in public af
fairs and over-zealous denial of
information to the public on se
curity grounds.
He urged Americans to do
their own thinking and speaking
on national and international is
sues, rather than let leadership
"pass to the demagogues."
On the Big Four conference,
Stevenson said "our task is to
keep our hopes high but our
heads clear, to consider every
suggestion honestly and dispas
sionately, to look for the bases
of agreement, and not least, to
be willing to take some reason
able chances."

THERE'S NO
CHANGE, MA'AM
The only noticeable change of
life experienced by a woman
who has a fair education which
means not only ordinary school
ing but proper physical educa
tion and instruction in Dhvsiol-
ogy and sex hygiene is gradual
cesation of the function of men
struation through a cycle of sev
eral months.
The middle aaed woman
that's anywhere from 35 to 55,
depending on vite who has any
discomfort or disability or in
deed any new complaint or
symptom or fear or anxiety, will
seek the advice of her physician
if she has god sense. If nerchance
she selects one who goofs, say
by telling her that most women
have some such disturbance as
hers at the "critical" time of life,
she would be wise to write it off
as tuition and look around for
a twentieth century physician.
That bugbear of middle age,
"hot flashes," sudden flushing
or flustering associated with dis
tressing warmth and sweating,
is a disturbance of metabolism
(oxidation or combustion rate)
which occurs most frequently in
middle aged persons but is by no
means confined to women. It
just seems that way because the
women talk about it (to each
other) whereas men prefer to
keep quiet about it, lest they be
come subject to jest.
Like other complaints of mid
dle aged persons, hot flashes are
more prevalent and more dis
tressing among the new-rich and
near-rich than among honest
folk. Or maybe it just seems so
because the new-rich and near
rich exaggerate their minor ail
ments too. Be that as it may, I
believe the middle aged person
who gets a reasonable amount of
general exercise every day, such
as walking to and from work or
business instead of riding, doing
ordinary housework or other
physical activity that relieves
the pressure on the ischial tuber
osities for an hour more, is much
less likely to have hot flashes
than is one who gets little or no
general exercise.
Too many men and women
have become settled in bad hab
its by the time they reach the
"dangerous age," eating too
heartily .drinking, smoking crap-
uiemiy and just sitting when
they should be doing something.
I do want to continue propagat-1
ing health and hygiene as lone
as I can, so I shall not define
here precisely what I mean by
mese terms, but 1 11 explain in a
personal communication what I
mean if you inquire and provide
a stamped, self-addressed enve
lope. But don't expect me to de
bate anything with you.
For relief of hot flashes it is a
good idea to boop your calcium
metabolism by following a high
calcium diet and or supplement
ing your ordinary diet with an
optimal daily ration of Ca and D
(vitamin D. that is. which is es
sential for normal assimilation
and utilization of calcium). If
this does no good, in any case it
Public Health Service
Gets Praise from Salk
Washington U.R) Dr.
Jonas E. Salk said Saturday
the Public Health service
"should be commended" for the
stiff new safety standards it has
ordered for the testing and pro
duction of Salk polio vaccine.
He made the statement as
Chairman J. Percy Priest of the
House Commerce committee or
dered a full investigation of the
vaccine controversy beginning
about a week from Tuesday.
Salk, in a statement issued
from his office in Pittsburgh,
praised Surgeon General Leon
ard A. Scheele for taking "con
crete steps to solve the prob
lems encountered in the vaccine
program.
"We must now allow time for
the reorganization of the Public
Health service to take place,"
he said, "and for its influence
to be felt." The service has ord
ered a major overhaul and ex
pansion of its vaccine safety ma
chinery.
