Southern Oregon Gem and Mineral society plans a public show in the boys' gymnasium, Medford Junior
High school, June 18-19, and assisting with plans are Mr. and Mrs. J. Duckett. Mrs. Duckett is pictured here near
the fireplace chimney of petrified wood which the couple built last summer at their home, 42 Washington street.
Members of the society contributed pieces from their own collections for the chimney. '
L. A. Mentzer is chairman of the coming show of Southern Oregon Gem- and Mineral society. Mr. Mentzer,
who has been collecting rocks and gems for 20 years, is shown here working at the polishing wheel made from
layers of felt. Tin oxide is used as the polishing ingredient, and in the background can be seen some of the
thunder eggs and pieces of petrified wood which Mr. Mentzer has cut and polished. The society's show is to be
open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., June 18, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday, June 19.

"Rock Hounds" Plan Show

One of the displays will be miniature furniture,
dishes and other objects made from agates, petrified
wood and similar material by Stanley H. Brown, Tigard,
Ore. The exhibit here will be the first showing of Mr.
Brown's complete collection.
Every year mineral society members make a field trip to Copco flats near the California
Oregon border. - This section yields valuable dendrites rocks which when properly cut and
polished show patterns resembling trees and ferns. Pictured here are the caravan of cars
and 37 society members who made the field trip last year.

Mrs. Orval Dawson (at left) and Mrs. Delmar Smith are both interested in rocks and minerals and Mrs. Smith
is secretary of the society. Mr. Smith, a beekeeper by profession, has collected rocks and minerals for many
years and has started a museum near Central Point. Mrs. Dawson, who assists Mr. Smith with polishing ar.J

Mr. and Mrs. Theodore G. Thompson, 26 Newtown street, will beamong the society's members exhibiting
at the show. Mr. Thompson specializes in jeweJry pieces with settings of agate and other beautiful and
interesting material. He not only designs and prepares the settings but also designs and casts such pieces as '
