EXPELLED BY REDS The
Chinese Communists expelled
Roman Catholic Bishop Fred
erick A. Donaghy (above) of
Fall River, Mass., on charges
of "subversive activities."
After crossing the border at
Hongkong and traveling by
train to Kowldon he looked
tired, but appeared to be in
good condition.
Reds Snuffing Out
Religion in China,
Ousted Bishop Says
Hong Kong (U.R) Roman
Catholic Bishop . Frederick A.
Donaghy, 52, of New Bedford,
Maw., said Saturday that the
Communists are gradually snuff
ing out religion In Red China.
Bishop Donaghy,, who has
spent 26 years in China as a
Maryknoll missionary, arrived
In Hong Kong Friday after be
ing expelled by the Reds from
his Wuchow Diocese for "sub
versive activities."
He told a press conference
'that it was "untrue" that there
is freedom of religion in Red
China.
Under the Communist regime,
he said, the faithful manage to
"keep alive" their religion, but
they cannot do so openly.
The bishop said the Reds main
tain a "constant wearing down"
process to keep Catholics from
attending mass.
Great Odds
He said the people have per
sisted in their religion as much
as possible against great odds,
despite intimidations and oflt
right threats not to attend serv
ices. But the eroding effect of the
Communist anti-religion cam
paign apparently is beginning to
show, he added.
The white-haired bishop, who
had not seen a foreigner in four
years and who has not been in
the United States in 17 years,
declined to answer questions per
taining to military affairs or eco
nomics in Red China because he
felt there might be repercussions
against Catholics still in China.
Trumpad-Up Charges
Bishop Donaghy said the Chi
nese Reds arrested him in De
cember, 1950, on "trumped-up
charges of having a package of
opium and a revolver" In his
home.
He said the evidence unearth-
ed by the Red security police
obviously was planted.
The Reds jailed Bishop Don
aghy for five months until May,
1951, when he was released af
ter still refusing to confess. He
said he did sign a paper saying
a revolver and opium were found
in his home, but not saying that
he knew It was there.
Menon Meets U.N.
Secretary Behind
Guarded Doors
United Nations (U.R) In
dia's V. K. Krishna Menon and
United Nations Secretary Dag
liammarskjoid conferred behind
guarded doors for 90 minutes to
day. Neither would comment on
the talks.
In a departure from normal
custom, UN guards barred news
men from the 38th floor of the
world organization headquarters
where the two men conferred
in Hammarskjold's office. UN
officials said thus action was
taken at Hammarskjold's order.
Menon was affable as he left
the building but he refused sub
stantial comment to a covey of
newsmen awaiting him at the
UN main entrance.
The Indian trouble-shooter did
say he saw nothing to occasion
headlines in the next few days,
but when a reporter asked if
that meant he did not believe
Red China could release 11 Am-
erican airmen it has sentenced
"spies, he replied:
as
"I did not say that.'
