Drs. Hansel and Chang estim
ated (Archives of Otolaryng
ology, Jan. '40) that 160,000 of
the annual one and a quarter
million tonsillectomies were un
necessary. They believed that, in
the absence of hay fever and
ashtma, nasal allergy and aller
gic bronchitis frequently eluded
diagnosis and that tonsillectomy
was often recommended because
allergic symptoms were mistak
en for those of infectious origin.
Children with nasal allergy.
allergic "sinus" trouble or aller
gic bronchial trouble are not
benefited by tonsillectomy.
Don't snarl at me, tonsil
snatchers. I'm merely trying to
teach people the truth as told to
recognized medical authorities.
I do hope neither Dr. Hansel nor
Dr.' Chang has changed his mind
about it in the intervening years,
as a Birmingham health author
ity did about rabies after he had
concluded that rabies is primar
ily a veterinary problem. Re
gardless of its prevalence among
dogs, it will probably never
cause sufficient morbidity or
mortality among human beings
in this region" (the rabies cap
ital of North America) "to allow
its classification as a public
health problem of importance."
The Birmingham man later had

partment. The U.S. Public Health
Service likes it that way,
and you know the federal boys
have something to say about the
allocation of federal funds to
local health departments.

health columning medical col
leagues who knew I wasn't using
my newspaper publicity to att
ract patients, as some column
ists do, used to tell me they en
vied me the privilege of speaking
out . . . well, this may have
pleased some readers but it has
made few friends in the medical
and dental professions.
About the allergic manifesta
tions which are so often mis
taken for "repeated colds,"
sinus trouble," bronchial trou
ble" and "infected tonsils," de
monstration of eosinophils in the
nasal secretion indicates that
the trouble is allergic and not
infectious, according to these
authorities. Eosinophils are cells
similar to or identical with
white blood corpuscles, which
take a red stain (eosin) in the
microscope specimen.
Although I know precious
liUJe about allergy, a good many
victims of the hypersenstivity
found the remedies I recommend
for prevention and relief highly
satisfactory. For detailed in
structions send stamped, self-
addressed envelope and ask for
the pamphlet Relief for Allergy.

ma, Eczema. Any one pamphlet

Blood Donors Slow
In Making Appointments
Appointments to give blood at
the visit of the Red Cross blood
mobile next Tuesday are coming
in slowly, it was reported to
day. Some 250 donors will be need
ed to provide the quota of 200
pints sought next week. Up to
yesterday only about 20 persons
had called to make appoint
ments. Donor appointments may be

day on a $252,966.48 tax levy
over the 6 per cent limitation for
the district's 1955-56 fiscal year

The levy election will be

The budget totals $600,841,
an increase of $402 over fiscal
