July, 1955, submitting thereat to the
legal voters of said city a proposed
ac. of municipal legislation amending
the-Charter of said city by amending
Section 65 of the Charter.
THE CITY OF MEDFORD DOTH
ORDAIN AS FOLLOWS.
Section 1. That there be. and here
by is, called a special election in ana
for the city of Medford. Oregon to be
held on the 5th day .:! July. 1955
for the purpose' of submitting thereat
to the legal voters of the city of Aei
ford a proposed act of municipal leg
islation as hereinafter set forth and
said election hereby .s ordered and
called to be held on tna abovff date
between the hours of 1 o'clock p.m..
and 8 o'clock pm., as orovided by
the charter of aaii city and the -tata
law for regular elections.
Section 2. Each of the four wards
within the city of Medford is hereby
declared to be and established as an
election precinct for the purpose of
said election and the following poll
ing places are hereby designated as
the polling places within the said city
and said precincts at hich said elec
tion will be held.
First Ward City Hall.
Second Ward Senior High School.
Third Ward Junior High school.
. Fourth Ward Boy Scout building.
Section 3. That the following per
sons hereby are designated as election
officials for each of the voting pre
cincts above mentioned:
First Ward:
Grace Pankey, Judge: Florence Gilk
ison. Judge who will also act as Clerk;

act as Clerk.
Second Ward:

the Mail Tribune, a newspaper pub
lished in and of general circulation
within the City of Medlord, Oregon;
two of which publications shall be
not less than ten days prior to said

and at three other public places in

weeks prior to such election.

AN ORDINANCE providing for the
construction of paving, curbs and
driveways on East Jackson Street
from end of Bear Creek Bridge to
Genesee Street in the City of Med
ford, Oregon, and for the assessment
of the cost thereof on adjacent prop
erty; providing for a meeting of the
Council to consider protests against
said improvement and providing for
the serving of the owners of adja
cent property with notice whereof
by the Recorder.
THE CITY OF MEDFORD DOTH
ORDAIN AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. That it is the intention
of the Council to cause to be con
structed paving, curbs and driveways
on East Jackson Street from end of
Bear Creek Bridge to Genesse Street
in accordance with the plans and
specifications on file in the office of
the City Manager, at the City Hall,
Medford, Oregon, to which plans and
specifications reference is hereby
made for details and estimated costs
thereof, and to assess upon each lot.
or part thereof, adjacent to and bene
fited by such improvement its propor
tionate share of the cost of said im
provement as provided by the Charter
of the City of Medford.
Section 2. The Council will meet in
the Council Chambers at the City Hall
on the 21st day of June. 1955 at 7:30
P.M.. at which time and place the
owners of said adjacent property are
nereby called upon to appear before
said Council and show cause, if any.
why said improvement should not be
constructed, and why said property
should not be 'assessed for the con
struction thereof.
Section 3. That warrants for the
costs of the aforementioned improve
ment shall bear interest at four per
cent (4) per annum and shall con
stitute general obligations of the City
of Medford, and the terms and condi
tions of said warrants shall be as pro
vided by in Oregon Revised Statutes
287.502 to 287.510 inclusive.
Section 4. The City Recorder is
hereby directed to serve notice hereof
upon the property owners aforesaid.

The Chinese Red Cross letter
was written in Peiping May 30,
the day four American fliers
were released to freedom.
The letter also expressed sym
pathy for the U.S. government's
refusal to permit relatives of
the imprisoned airmen to visit
them in Red China and said the
Communists' original offer still
stands.
The Red Cross said a letter

Chou had been delivered by
U. N. Secretary - General Dag
Hammarskjold when he attempt
ed to negotiate with Chou for
the release of the Americans,
Pendleton Culinary
Labor Tiff Settled
Pendleton (U.R) A strike
by some 120 culinary workers in
the Pendleton area was settled
yesterday.
The workers, members of the
Culinary and Bartenders local
536 (AFL) of Pendleton received
their demands for a $1 an hour
minimum wage. The old pay
scale was 85 cents an hour.
The contract also provides for
additional holidays.
The strike began last Thurs
day. It affected nine restaurants,
two lounges, a bar and a tavern
in Pendleton. Contracts still
were unsigned in some parts of
Umatilla county and at Board
man in Morrow county.
Pickets were immediately
withdrawn following the signing
of the contract.

FAR EAST STRIKE
Yokohama, Japan (U.R)
Some 5,000 workers at the U.S.
Army's largest vehicle repair
plant in the Far East went on a
24-hour strike today against a
60 per cent personnel cut. Em
ployees staged a protest rally
against the dismissal of 3,745
workers at the Fuji automobile
plant. There was no violence.
The employees were dismissed be
cause of a cut in procurement

the Butte Falls Grange, June 6.
There were 19 officers and mem
bers present.

and fourth degree by the master.

HEC chairman reported the
next HEC meeting will be at
the home of Ella Pingle, June
15, at 8 p.m. The serving com
mittee for the next Grange
meeting will be Mr. and Mrs.
Bruce Pingle and Ed Malloy.
Frieda Moore, community
service chairman, reported that
the bulletin board will be up in
the post office very soon, and
that there were 14 members that
helped clean the cemetery. There
will be another work day to fin
ish this project sometime later
on. Thanks to all who helped.
Another project that was sug
gested was to work on the yard
of the Little Brown church. Also
the women are going to help
clean the inside of the church.
June 11 is the day for the work
in the yard.
The lecturer's program con
sisted of singing by the Grange,
and several readings concerning
Father's day. Elga Abbott, so
cial chairman, reported on the
social meeting . June 17, and
more will be announced about
it later. The Grange voted to
hold the July meeting on July
11, instead of the regular night,
July 4.
. Refreshments were served by
Mrs. Jim Arnold, Mrs. Roger
Harris, and Mrs. Kizzie Edmond-son.

vestigation of a possible light
plane crash in the Deep Crater
area of northern California was
halted yesterday after it was de
termined wreckage sighted was
at least a month old.
Members of the Klamath Falls
air search and rescue unit began
an investigation early yesterday
after a pilot en route from Sacs'
ramento to Tule Lake reported
that a plane was down in the
Deep Crater area five miles west
of Round Mountain.
