President
To Seek Second Tern

Hoover had his early morning
"Medicine Ball Cabinet." Way
back yonder the term "Kitchen
Cabinet" described the informal
group of advisers closest to
President Andrew Jackson.
Many of President Harding's
troubles could be traced to the
men from whom he took too
much advice, "The Ohio Gang."
Some presidents pick one top
and unofficial minister, as Presi
dent Coolidge chose merchant
Frank W. Stearns of Boston,
Mass., and Woodrow Wilson
picked Col. E. M. House.
These advisers or groups of
advisers usually are more power
ful in their influence upon a
president than the members of
his cabinet or big league politi
cians. t
It will come as bad news to
Democrats that the M-A-E are
consistenly plugging for Mr.
Eisenhower to run again.
The President probably has
not yet made up his mind. He
has told intimates from time to
time that he is through that
a second term is out. But it is
remarked in Washington that re
ports of these sometimes annoy
ed disavowals of further political
ambition have been less frequent
of late.
. It was not unusual 12 months
or even less back for a highly
situated politico to relate in con
fidence to friends after a White
House visit with Mr. Eisenhower
had said he would not again seek
the presidency.
The M-A-E appear to be partly
responsible for the decrease in
such remarks. Their enthusiasm
for his renomination recently be
came so great that Mr. Eisen
hower requested his top White
House aides to cease discussing
in public the desirabiliy or likli
hood of a second term. But these
aides are not discouraged in
their eager efforts to make the
presidency a' more comfortable
jab. J '
The staff system of adminis
tration which the President
brought to the White House from
the Army could and, doubtless,
does considerably eae the bur
den of executive responsibility.
The M-A-E are responsible for
making the staff system work.
The greatest triumph of the
second termers, however, pop
ped up only last week when the
President took off for his Gettys
burg farm in an Oklahoma-built,
twin - engined Aero Commander.
The M-A-E have worried con
siderably about the 85 miles of
winding and sometimes narrow
road over which the President
must travel to his country home.
It is a dangerous, two - hour
drive. And two hours is too long.
The Aero Commander can make
it in 30 minutes, sometimes less.'
Mr. Eisenhower will use his
small airplane again tfiis week
end after receiving a degree
from Pennsylvania State Univer
sity at State College, Pa., of
which his brother, Milton,' is
president It is 75 miles from
State College to Gettysburg. The
airplane will do it in about 15
minutes.
Mr. Eisenhower has said he
wants to spend more time on his
farm. That is one reason he has
hesitated about a second term.
The handy, new airplane, makes
Gettysburgh a suburb of Wash
ington for the President. He now
can spend any week night on
the farm, breakfast there and be
on time for work in Washington.
That little airplane may per
suade the President that anoth
er term wouldn't be so bad, after
all. The M-A-E can take a bow.

indicated to French Premier
Edgar Fuare that Russia will
accept the West'c invitation to
a top level Big Four meeting in
Geneva July 18-21.
Authoritative French sources
said Molotov told Faure and
French Foreign Minister Antoine
Pinay at' a hastily arranged
luncheon meeting at the Quai
d'Orsay that Russia has no fun
damental objections to the dates
and dace nroDOsed by the West.
Molotov will sail tonight on
the Queen Elizabeth for the
United States and a.une 20
meeting at San Francisco with
the Big Three Western foreign
ministers..
Lack of Concentration Noted in Polio Cases
Washington U.R) The U. S.
Public Health Service said today
that so far this year there is
little evidence of "any unusu
ally high concentration" of polio
cases in any specific local areas.
In arriving at this estimate of
the polio situation, it took into
consideration the population size
in the various areas arid the
usual seasonal occurrence of the
disease.
The service said 251 new polio
cases were reported in the week
ending June 4 as compared with
246 and 241 cases, respectively,
for the preceding two weeks.. In
the corresponding week of last
year 224 cases were reported.
Total number of cases report
ed for the calendar year stood
at 2540 as compared to 2910 "in
1954. For the "disease" year be
ginning April 1, the total is
1476 as compared to 1357 last
year. .
The service noted large in
creases in new cases were re
ported over last week's report
in Texas with 37 to 52 cases,
California with 28 to 39, and
Florida with 6 to 15.

cent beauty contest on Barrio
Wari on the island of Panay re
sulted in the death of more than
37,000 rats, the Department of
Agriculture reported today. The
contest sponsored by the depart
ment stipulated that votes for the
beauty queen be cast In rat tails.
