    Graham's Simple
Message Attracts
Praise in Paris
Paris (U.R) Billy Gra
ham's simple message attracted
warm praise and unexpected
success in this strongly Catholic
country today.
The American evangelist had
6,000 listeners at the Palais Des
Sports Monday night A sur
prisingly large turnout for Mon
day which usually is the slow
est day of the week. Of these,
365 came forward for Christ.
These figures, added to Sun
day's "greatest opening victory"
brought the crusade's two- day
figures to 16,000 attendance and
988 decisions.
This percentage of decisions
in this predominately Catholic
city has been about treble the
number as Graham's most suc
cessful meetings in Britain.
Comment Stirred
The success of Graham's cru
sade stirred much comment to
day from every corner of Paris.
The preacher's ability to "reach"
his audiences in a generally anti-revival
society surprised both
religious and lay observers.
Most observers agreed with
Pastor Albert Finet, director of
the leading French weekly "Re
forme," who attributed Gra
ham's success to the simplicity
of his message. Finet, lukewarm
to the American before hearing
his service, said Graham's theo
logy was "reduced to a bare
. minimum that anyone could ac
cept, even a Catholic priest "
The French press other
than Communist and Catholic
newspapers agreed with Fin
et's appraisal of the services. It
praised the revivalist's dynamic
appeal and simple but stirring
message.

Backstairs: From Squirrels to Ducks
By MERRIMAN SMITH
United Press White House Writer
West Point, N. Y. (U.R)
Backstairs at the White House:
. Only one member of President
Eisenhower's military academy
class of 1915 is still on active
duty in the armed forces. He
is Lt. Gen. Hubert R Harmon,
superintendent of the" new Air
Force academy at Colorado
Springs.
The same source that provid
ed the original story of the de
ported White House squirrels
brings in a new one on wild life
at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
It seems that about three
weeks ago two mallard ducks
took up residence in the foun
tain on the south grounds of
the White House. .
On a recent dull and rainy
day, the President's valet, John
Moaney, captured the female
mallard near the White House
tennis courts and proudly, bore
his prize to Mrs. Eisenhower for
her inspection.
Mrs. Eisenhower smiled, but
sent Moanev on his wav to the
fountain where he restored the
lady mallard to the water. At
last count, the ducks were hav
ing a fine time watching the
tourists.
New White House problem:
What to name the President's
new jitney plane, his four seater
which has been designated by
the Air Force as "AF2." The big
White House plane, the Colum
bine, named after the ..state
flower of Mrs. Eisenhower's na
tive Colorado, is referred to by
the Air Force as AF1
Since the President lias named
Camp David after his grandson,
and a cabin cruiser after his
eldest granddaughter, Barbara,
it has been suggested that the
small plane be called "The Lazy
Susan" after the third grand
child, Susan Elaine.
The President might have
flown to West Point for com
mencement and the 40th reunion
of his class in the AF2, but Mrs.
Eisenhower came with him.
Thus, they used the large plane.
Riding in aircraft without pres
surized cabins makes her un
comfortable, and the AF2 is
without this and many other
creature comforts of the Colum
bine. Anyway, Mrs. Eisenhower
couldn't get in the AF2 without
displacing the Secret Service ag
ent who rides with the Presi
dent or one of the two pilots.
Plane has seats only for four.
A prominent woman author
who asked that her name not be
used called the White House in
some alarm the other day to re
port this incident:
She was standing in front of
the Mayflower Hotel on Connec
ticut Avenue when an utterly
strange woman came up to her
and fished some photographs out
of a purse.
"Would you like to see some
pictures I made of the entrance
to the underground Pentagon?"
the stranger said. "It's supposed
to be so secret."
The lady author couldn't tell
