Paralysis, says that information
on the Cutter Laboratories Salk
polio vaccine should be released
by the government immediately
to remove "the five o'clock
shadow" over the vaccine pro
gram. "If it hadn't been for the Cut
ter situation, the program would
have gone ahead as scheduled,"
O'Connor said. "It was something
we couldn't have foreseen and
the Cutter question must be an
swered to remove any existing
doubt."
O'Connor, in an address before
350 persons last night, sniped at
critics of the Salk program who
said vaccinations had been has
tily undertaken.
"The vaccine program took
many years of step by step de
velopment," he said. "Nothing
has been done with anything re
sembling haste."

Lest some leads in the Pink-ham-Pierce
tragi - comedy "The
Crisis" prefer to remain unen
lightened, I'll say right here that
there are only two actual chan
ges in the life of the middle
aged woman (Webster, not I,
will define the term), and these
are (1) cessation of menstruation,
and (2) ovulation. The woman is
aware of the first, but not of
the second change that is to
say the menopause manifests
itself by cessation of menstrua
ation and only . . .
Oh-oh, wait a moment, there's
no point in driving a hundred
thousand women over to the
racketeers.
So we'll delete only ignorant
ones imagine it accounts for
whatever shortcomings or ail
ments they happen to have after
forty, and put it this way:

struation the only manifestation
an intelligent woman may" asso
ciate with the menopaus is, I re
gret to say, the discomfort com-
! monly called "hot flashes." I
regret to say so because physi
cians do not even know whether
the hot flashes are due to too
much or too little internal se
cretion from the ovaries
ovarian hormone; or perhaps to
a disturbance of the autonomic
(automatic) regulation of the cir
culation from some cause un
related to sex.

leads them to believe an ovarian

able (on prescription) as Pro

A.D. most clothes will be obso
lete. By that time women will have
approached a perfection of body.
We are growing closer to this
every day. Healthful living, sen
sible diet and proper thinking
will be the thing.
In short, emphasis will be
placed on the feminine form
rather than the clothes that
cover it.
I gave this subject serious
consideration in preparing
MGM's science - fiction movie,
"Forbidden Planet," which takes
place in 2200 A.D. at this date,
I believe, anything but the brief
est tunic will be out.
Ava Ahead of Times
I'm sure the women of that
age will look back at us with
amusement and amazement. In
this year, 1955, we grid our
selves into breath-stopping foun
dation garments to achieve the
wasp-waisted look. The next day
we crawl into nylon armor to
control our curves for the long-
torso look.
I also think Ava Gardner was :
ahead of our times. In the future j
we'll have a whole race of bare-1
footed females.
The feminine foot has been dis
figured by shoes. We are gradual
ly getting back to the simplicity
of the Grecian sandal. In an
other 250 years women's feet
will have regained the beauty
lost through years of cramping
into unnatural shapes and sizes.
This "shape of things to come"
is destied to be Utopia for the
budg-.
No More Jewels
No more furs, nor jewels.
Coats of any type will be passe.
By this time all of the fabrics
worn will be insulated against
both heat and cold, thus eliminat
ing the need for added protection
against wind or weather.
As for jewels, complete un
adorned simplicity will be the
keynote of beauty.
I admit the majority of to
day's women will take a gloomy
view of life minus furs, jewels,
changing silhouettes and Dior's
predictions.
The lucky woman of tomor
row will be the one who con
siders herself unlucky today.
She'll be the fashion leader
one who lowers her eyes de
murely and whispers:
"But I have absolutely nothing
to wear."

Many women have assured me
that supplementing their ordin
ary diet with extra calcium and

Although the menopause
marks the termination of fertili
ty, the capacity to conceive and
bear children, it has no effect on
sex appeal or potency.
The credulity of women ac
counts for the many fishwife su
perstitions about the so-called
"change," "female weakness,"
"displacement" and other mor
bid concepts cultivated and
treated by doctors endowed with
little conscience.

Collision Studied

Coast Guard investigation will
open tomorrow into the collision
of the Union Oil tanker L. P. St.
Claire and the Luckenbach
freighter Marine Snapper in the
dense fog off the Golden Gate
yesterday morning.
Inquiry officers will attempt
to learn why two ships equipped
with radar capable of "seeing"
through fog should have collided.
The accident occurred at 9:21
a.m. (PST), shortly after the
Marine Snapper had cleared the
Gate en route to Seattle. The St.
Claire was inbound. There were
no injuries and both vessels pro
ceeded to port under their own
power.
The St. Claire suffered a dam
aged bow and the Marine Snap
per had a 40-foot hole ripped in
her hull on the port side.
