Activity Helps Give
Perspective On Sorrow
Worry can poison the mind as
well as the body.
(Q) "Several months ago. you
wrote an article about the harm
ful effects of worry. I read it at
a time wnen
was so upset
and unhappy I
didn't know
what to do or
where to turn
for help. It
helped me so
much that I
am now writ
ing to you for
further help.
Dr. Hurlock
Just before I read your article,
my fiance died. Needless to say,
I was heartbroken. Now I am
beginning to pull myself to
gether but I need help. I thought
joining a club would help me to
forget. Don't you think I am
making the right decision?"
(A) You can't forget the man
you loved and had planned to
marry. However, you will be
able to get a better perspective
on your sorrow if you are with
people and doing things to keep
yourself from brooding. Sitting
at home alone and thinking of
what might have happened, had
your fiance lived, will add to
your grief and will'help nothing.
Joining a club would be splen
did, but that alone is not enough.

Most clubs meet once a week or
once a month. You need some
outside interests and activities
every day, at least until you' be
gin to see life in a new perspec
tive. Join as many groups as
you can, and make arrangements
to see friends every day when
you would otherwise be alofce.
When you are alone, you are
likely to worry and grieve. This
will play havoc with your health
because worry upsets the normal
functioning of every organ of
your body. In addition, it will
"poison" your thoughts and pro
duce a bitter, resentful attitude
which will be reflected in every
thing you say or do. This can be
more damaging to your , future
than the bad effects of worry on
your health.

Q. What is a tonic?
A. A medicine that increases
or restores physical or mental
tone, invigorates, refreshes or
braces. (Webster)
Q. What's tone?
A. Firmness of the healthy
body, particularly firmness of
the muscles which exists inde
pendently of voluntary effort.
Q. Please name a good tonic
or two?
A. Not so fast. You remem
ber this is a health column, not
a clinic.
Away back when I was an
honest family doctor well, then
a family doctor, I dispensed bar
rels of tonic and what's more,
a good many patients came back
again and again for more of
the same tonic.
My whooper duper tonic must
have tasted I can't describe the
taste, because, I'm afraid, I never
tasted the stuff myself, but I can
tell you that if a tonic didn't
taste very bad it wasn't very
good. Maybe you can get an idea
of the taste when I say it was
Elixir of Iron, Quinine and
Strychnine, N. F., and may the
Lord have mercy on my soul.
The truth is that, to the best
of my knowledge, no medicine
or combination of medicines can
be truthfully described as a
tonic.
Nerve tonic? Don't be childish.
Heart tonic? Are you serious?
Essential food is tonic. Regu
lar moderate general daily exer
cise is tonic. Clean fresh air is
tonic. Necessary rest is tonic.
Essential food does not mean
purified, refined, prepared, pro
cessed, homogenized, tenderized,
fortified, defatted or otherwise
doctored stuff ready to serve
right out of the convenient can j
or the pretty package. It means j
food in its natural form, with all i
the nutritional factors required j
by the body in it protein, fat, ;
carbohydrate (starch and sugar),
fiber, cellulose, bone marrow,
minerals and vitamins.
Take the staff of life, for in
stance. What passes for 'bread
nowadays is only a broken reed.
Prior to the middle of the 19th
century nearly if not quite all of
the wheat went into the grist or
flour universally used for bread
making. The dainty bleached
product called flour today cannot
support life, much less satisfy
hunger, even though it comes
Tourists Die of
Thirst in Sahara
London (U.R) Two British
tourists died of thirst while try
ing to cross the Sahara Desert
in French West Africa last
month, according to diplomatic
reports released here. A
third survived but was reported
still hospitalized in serious con
dition from his ordeal.
A French military search par
ty found Miss Muriel Taylor of
Chester, - England, and Alain
Cooper of Kenya, dead in their
small EnglisA made car less
than 50 miles from the oais town
of Guezzam, according to reports
from the British Consul at Da
kar. The reports were released
by the Foreign Office.
The third tourist, Peter
Barnes, was picked up by an Al
gerian truck driver. The truck
driver said he found Barnes
wandering afoot almost uncon
scious from lack of water. The
others, he said, were sitting in
the car nearby and he ordered
them to iollow his truck. But
somehow they lost contact, the
reports said.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
What! No Ens?
Since I read an article about Salm
onella in eggs. I can't eat egss, and
owing to a nervous stomach I never
eat meat, having depended on eggs as
my main source of protein . . . (Miss
C. F.)
Answer Salmonella is the name
given to a genus of germs (named aft
er discoverer, Daniel Salmon) which
are a comon cause of intestinal infec
tion or meat poisoning in man. A bit
worse than colon bacillus infections,
not so bad as typhoid bacillus infec
tion. Eggs cooked and left exposed or
carelessly handled mav become con
taminated with Salmonella, but eggs
cooked or raw and consumed fresh
rarely if ever account for food poison
ing. Maybe you have a bad case of
introspection
