Health Day, which each school
celebrates with athletic events
and refreshments.

All Are Examined
Besides contests to develop
interest in the health program,
the health service examines all !
pupils in Medford public schools
when classes start each fall. No
tices indicating physical condi
tions which should receive at
tention are sent to parents. Vi
sion and hearing tests conducted
at regular intervals reyeal de
fects, which also are referred to
parents.
The pupil, if found to have
defective vision or hearing, is
seated in the room so he may
hear and see to the best advan
tage.
The program objective is to
determine the health status of I
each pupil, because his ability to
learn and regular attendance are
closely related to his health.
Last fall, 4,105 pupils in Med
ford schools were examined by
a physician, while 2,434 elemen
tary school children took hear
ing tests. Some 184 boys and
girls in the sophomore class
were given tuberculin skin tests
last fall.
Exams in Mar
Children who expect to start
school for the first time in the
fall are given an opportunity to
have physical examinations the
preceeding May, and some 309
children expected to start first
grade, in September received
examinations last month.
Those prospective pupils who
are found to have correctible de
fects have the opportunity to
consult family physicians for
corrective measures before
school starts.
Of the number of children
who took the pre-school exami
nations, 292 had vaccinations for
smallpox, 61 had initial shots for
prevention of diphtheria, and
232 had booster shots.
