ARE YOUR NAILS WELL NOURISHED?
Growth of the nails, like
growth of the skin as in the
healing of wound or .ulcer, pro
ceeds at a rate which depends on
the state of nutrition.
Most Americans get most of
their daily calories directly or in
directly from what I call cheat
food, or what more polite nutri
tional authorities call inadequate
food, meaning the stuff has been
deprived of most of the vitamins
and minerals before the food
barons consider it pure and re
fined enough for the namby
pamby Yankee digestion. In oth
er words refined white flour and
refined white sugar yield most
of the calories in the everyday
diet of most Americans. So we
hold these two high calory food
staples, which keep so well that
they may be shipped anywhere
and stored indefinitely, mainly
responsible for the national mal
nutrition. A diet of refined white sugar
andor refined white flour will
not keep animal or man alive as
long as a diet of sugar cane or
beet andor wheat.
Now, before you make a note
on your shopping list to get a
trial package of crude or "natu
ral" brown sugar andor a pound
of plain wheat next time you go
to the grocery or market, I must
warn you it is not that easy.
In order to procure plain
wheat you must first find a farm
er who grows it and then per
suade the poor geek he won't get
in trouble with the government
if he sells you a few pounds of
the stuff when nobody's looking.
And if by any chance you
come across crude brown or
"natural" sugar in the market
you'll still be stymied by a trick
notice stamped on the bag, to the
effect that it is suitable for ani
mal feed. That is not to say it is
unfit for human consumption,
but, after all, suppose the clerk
asked what kind of animals you
keep at your house?
. If your nails do not grow as
fast as they should it takes
three to four months for the nails
to grow their full length nor
mally or if they are brittle,
ridged, pitted, it isn't just the
damage done by the hideous
"polish" if you're short on
brains. The trouble is malnutri
tion' and if you hope to regain a
state of good nutrition you'll
have to cut out most of the
cheat foods on which you worry
along at present and eat the foods
which everybody ate before the
middle of the nineteenth century
when the food barons began to
"refine" things for the ignorant
Yankee' consumer.

Irrigation Project
Study Is Slated
In Yreka Vicinity
Yreka ,The Butte Valley
Water Development association,
a non-profit corporation of land
owners, has succeeded in obtain
ing a study to determine the
feasibility of an extensive irriga
tional and drainage system. The
proposed system would call for
obtaining water from the Klam
ath river for the Butte Valley
area. .
The Siskiyou board of super
visors this week voted to enter
into a joint contract with the
association and the Bureau of
Reclamation, which will make
the study. The bureau will fi
nance a part of the study, but
some of the' cost was required
to be put up by the association.
Funds Raised
Delas Mills, president of the
association, told the board that
$5,000 has been raised, and an
additional $5,000 in contribu
tions are expected. The cost esti
mate for the county is $5,000. If
the study proves the plan practi
cal, Butte Valley residents will
probably file for a federal aid
grant to do the work.
It was stated that if the pro
posed project goes into effect,
12,000 acres of land which can
not now be cultivated for lack of
water will go on county tax rolls.
The land is now under the
supervision of the federal forest
service, but if water is made
available it would be released
for private ownership.

Police Look for Killer of India's 'Father Flanagan'
Chicago (U.R) Police sought
a razor-wielding bandit and
questioned delegates to the Rot
ary International convention to
day in their search for the killer
of the "Father Flanagan of
India."
The Rev. John Chiramal, 42,
died Thursday of shock and loss
of blood after gasping "I've been
attacked, I've been robbed."
Two hours earlier he had stag
gered from his car to the door
of the Little Sisters of the Poor
shelter. A seven-inch slash ran
from his heart almost to his left
shoulder.
The Roman Catholic priest
died in a hospital before he
could tell what had happened.
His only clue was that he was
attacked "far away."
Police theorized that he had
been stabbed as early as seven
hours before his death and had
managed to drive to his final
destination, holding a blood
soaked shirt to his chest to stop
the bleeding and steering with
the other hand.
An inquest into the slaying
was to be held today.

England, 12, let the big one get
away Thursday when he was
practicing rod and reel casting
in his front yard. jHook, line and
sinker were found four blocks
away but the car he snagged
escaped.
Father Chiramal had come to
Chicago to raise funds for the
Boys Town of India home he
heads in the village of Kumba
langi, India. The Indian priest
had modeled the home on the
famed Boys Town of Nebraska,
founded by the late Father Flan
agan, and was known as the
"Father Flanagan of India."
