A spendthrift shopper can
play havoc with a family budget.

wrote about a
wife who was
annoyed be
cause her hus
band brought
too much and
too expensive
food when he
went shopping
for the family.
I would like
Dr. Hurlock to present the
other side of the picture. My
wife does all the marketing. She
has always insisted that this is
the woman's, job. Even when I
want to help her home with the
bundles, she still objects.
"She gets such small amounts
of food and often such poor cuts
of meat that they are hardly fit
to eat. As for vegetables, we live
on. carrots, beets, turnips, and
spinach. Never peas, asparagus,
tomatoes, or corn, even in sea
son. It is the same with fruits
never fresh oranges or other
tasty fruits just bananas, apples,
and grapes. Why does .she pinch
like this? Because she want to
keep some of the food money
for clothes for herself. No mat
ter what I say, I haven't been
able to make her see how selfish
and unfair to me this is. What
would you suggest that I do?"

way using reason, why not try
eating some of your meals away
from home- and deduct the
amount from her food budget?
When you come to the dinner
table and find tough meat, the
same old vegetables and the
same fruits you have had for
months, get up and leave. In-

for your dinner, and then do so.
After you have deducted what
the meal cost from the next
week's food budget, it may im
press her more than all the
words you could use. Several ex
periences of this sort should be
enough to make her come to her
senses and realize that she can
not cheat on the family food
for her clothes.

position yesterday to his tenth
two-year term as president of
the International Longshoremen
and Warehousemen's union.
Longshore locals on the West
Coast will hold a 24-hour stop
work s demonstration next Mon
day in protest at the govern
ment's fifth attempt to deport
Bridges for falsifying a citizen
ship application.
Also on Monday, a delegation
of ILWU members will petition
President Eisenhower to dismiss
the case.
Bridges is accused of falsely
stating in a citizenship applica
tion that he was not affiliated
with the Communist party.

when, I rolled the eight-two

to 1. Pity I was only betting the
100 francs (30 cents) minimum.
Although it has been here
several years, the crap table
still looks incongruous in the
elegant, marble-columned salons
of the casino so long sacred to
baccarat, roulette and trente-et-quarante.

The management of the time
decided that craps , would not
only attract American trade but
would give Europeans a new
incentive to lose chips. Accord
ingly they sent two emmissaries
to the states and after weeks of
study they brought back craps,
American style, complete with
incantations.
But, alas, gambling in Europe
is a silent occupation. Only the
murmur of the croupiers dis
turbs the concentration over the
whirling wheels and turning
cards. There were frowns when
the first players, carefully
coached, groaned "yeux de cou
leuvre" (snake eyes) or "train
de marchandises" (box cars).
Craps Table Moved
So the crap table is now down
at one end of the low limit

As it is, the croupier does
most of the talking. And since
the French have given up try
ing to invent a French vocabu
lary for the game, he calls
American terms with a strong
French accent. '

When it was my turn to roll,
I decided to liven it up again.
"Tenner from Vienna," I be-
