Off Poflio Vaccine
Editor's note: A series of govern
ment actions and reports finally
cleared away much of the confusion
plaguing the nation's polio vaccina
tion program. In the following dit
patch. It is possible for the first time
fn nearly seven weeks to provide of
ficial answers for many of the ques
, tions troubling parents.

Washington (U.R) Many par
ents are wondering what to do
about polio shots for their child
ren now that the government has
given the signal for resumption
of the inoculation program.
Here are the main questions
they are asking along with the
answers provided by the public
health service, leading polio ex
perts, and other authorities:
SAFETY
Q. It Salle vaccina iafe?
A The nation's top polio spe
cialists have reexamined the
basic formula and proclaimed it
safe and effective. The Public
Health Service has double
checked all vaccine distributed
so far and pronounced it gen
erally safe. Only announced ex
ceptions: Two suspect lots by
Cutter Laboratories. Stiff new
federal testing and manufactur
ing standard were put into effect
last week to make new batches
extra safe.
WHEN TO INJECT
Q When is the best lime to
have your children vaccinated?
A A committee of - govern
ment advisers, including Dr.
Jonas E. Salk, said the best time
is "before the epidemic season,"
which runs from mid-August to
mid-September. But it said shots
during a polio outbreak do have
a place in preventive medicine.
Q It it tafe. then, to go ahead
with second shots this summer?
A You should check with
your private physician or with
your local health authorities on
this point. The Salk committee
said second shots can be given
during the height of the polio
season "without appreciable con
cern" because of the "slight im
munity" provided by the first.
Q What about first injections
during the height of the polio
season?
A Authorities disagree. You
should get the advice of your
physician or local medical offic-

are Larry, a junior in Medford

season only after "careful con
sideration" of the possible
dangers.
Many experts categorically op
pose injections then, however,
because of the known fact that
shots of any kind at such a time
often trigger paralysis in a per
son where the polio virus has
been incubating.
Dr. Leonard A. Scheele, U. S.
Surgeon General, personally fav
ors going ahead with first injec
tions on the grounds the chance
of paralysis being triggered is
"minor" compared to the ad
vantage of being protected
against possible polio.
INTERVAL BETWEEN SHOTS
Q Does the first shot have to
be repeated if there is a long
delay before the second shot is
given? ,
A No. The ideal interval be
tween first and second shots is
two to six weeks but the second
dose can be given with benefit
months after the first. The first
dose provides some immunity
for as much as two years. The
third shot should be given about
seven months after the first dose,
preferably shortly before next
year's polio season.
SUPPLIES
Q Who gets first call on
available vaccine supplies?
A The 9,000,000 first and sec
ond grade children being inocu
lated free by the National Foun
dation for Infantile Paralysis.
Q Who comes after that?
A Other children in polio's
most susceptible age group
five through nine years. Presi
dent Eisenhower has asked that
they be given top priority after
the first and second graders.
Q When will these various
groups be taken care of?
A Mr. Eisenhower expects
enough vaccine will be released
to finish the program for first
and second graders by Aug. 1.
There is no official estimate on
how soon other children will
get their shots but the govern
ment expects vaccine supplies
to pick up substantially after
Aug. 1.
NEEDY CHILDREN
Q What about children whose
parents can't afford to pay for
shots?
A Congress is expected to
pass legislation requested by Mr.
Eisenhower providing $28,000,
000 to buy vaccine for needy
children. Some states are ar
ranging to inoculate all their
children free.
CUTTER VACCINE
Q What's wrong with Cutter
vaccine?
A The Public Health Service
says there appears to be a "def
inite association" between two
Cutter lots and nearly 70 con
firmed cases of polio among Cutter-inoculated
children. But it
said exhaustive tests so far have
failed to prove the vaccine is
to blame and that "we may
never learn the cause of the
incident."
Q Is there any danger for
Cutter-inoculated children who
haven't come down with polio?
A Scheele says no. He says
children who received Cutter
vaccine before it was withdrawn
from the public April 27 pre
sumably already would have
come down with polio by now
if they were going to get it.
EFFECTIVENESS
q What is the advantage of
Salk vaccine?
A Scheele says the chances
of a vaccinated child getting
polio are only about 1 in 6000.
The chances of a non-vaccinated
child contracting it, he said, are
about 1 in 1700.
Q Does the vaccine guaran
tee a child against polio?
A By no means. The field
tests last year showed it is 60
to 90 per cent effective against
the various types of polio not
100 per cent. Scientists say it
is probably more effective this
year because of the elimination
of a defective preservative and
other improvements. But it still
is not sure-fire.
